Winging it in Alaska

Here goes my flight from Juneau Intl.-Anhorage Intl. I've become very fond of the MD-80s and MD-90 series since I flew on a real Delta MD-88 back in 2000 from Orlando Intl to LGA. I've been looking all over for a Delta MD-88.

Besides the fact I think MD-80's and MD-90's are as junky as the original DC-9's, I thiink your shots are very nice!

If you timed the Mooney in the third shot, I'd say you were a little cocky! Neat shots. That airline, incedentally, was involved in one of the nastiest accidents i've ever seen. 737 landed, but what a mess. Anyone know what happened??  :-X

Ugh, that wasn't the nastiest Alaska airlines accident. Remember the DC-9(or was it an MD series) that lost all elevator control and took a nose dive into the ocean outside of LAX? Terrible, terrible crash.

I listened to the ATC from that flight where they lost control of the elevator.  Just hearing the pilot talking about it, then hearing the other pilots around saying that they saw the plane hit the water... it was really scary.

I could tell you exactly why it crashed, but it would take me a while to type out, so I'll say it plain:

Boeing said it was OK for Alaska to put a new kind of grease in unit which adjusts the elevator pitch. Alaska did this, without cleaning out the old grease first, but they were not instructed to by Boeing. The two greases will not combine, and actually seperate from each other, causing a severe lack of lubrication in the screw. This lack of lube caused grinding and seizure of the unit, which disabled effective elevator control.

There is a lot more to it, but I'm tired, and have a job interview tomorrow, might be working at a Cessna (and other manufacture) service station.

I always thought the MD-80 series was one of the safest with the least fatal crashes.

It was a MD-83, Flight 261. I had to do a report on it for one of my classes. The scenery is default.
