hi...is there any sensible way of upgrading my cpu?....i can only overclock mine to 3.6...in other words, by not having to change my motherboard......thanks.....

You should be able to get higher than 3.6GHz with that CPU and MB unless the CPU is a total dog.  Why do you think that you can not get higher than 3.6GHz?

Below are my 4.2GHz OC that I had for a i7 950 / Asus P6T Deluxe v2.  You will need to change the dram timings and dram bus voltage to suit your ram.  Do you know how to stress test a OC for stability and do you use Realtemp to monitor your core voltages when stress testing?

As far as upgrading the processor, if you can find one a 980X, if not then a plain 980, but if your MB is the problem then upgrading your CPU may not help any, if help at all.

If you have a motherboard/CPU/ram that supports it then overclocking your CPU will give you higher FPS, at higher graphic settings and reduce stutters.

It is not a fix for every problem with FSX, but it is one that helps a lot if you have the capability.  Also if you do it and do it right this alone is one of the best, if not the best, FSX tweaks out there.  Be warned that if your GPU can not handle the additional data that an overclocked CPU will throw at it then overclocking your CPU may actually make FSX worse.

I dont think/mean you can get much more out from fsx by oc cpu from 3.6 to 4.2! That goes for oc ram too!
What can mean something, is oc gpu if you got the possibility to do it, but if someone is telling others how to do it, they have to warn people about the possible consequences.

I must say in all my PC, tower/desktop, computer builds, over the years, since 1995, I have never attempted to to risk over-clocking my central processors or graphics cards.
Whenever I found them unsatisfactory for the latest game, etc, software I was using, I merely replaced the motherboard and/or, processor, and/or graphics card, with a later/better/faster type, and leave them as standard...and still under guarantee!

If I find my Motor-bike is too slow for me...I buy a faster Motor-bike!

My present Tower specification suits my FS 2004 admirably...
...to run FSX at the same settings, and smoothness, would require a complete computer re-build!... ...!

thanks idahosurge.......i'll pass this along too my friend who is computer wise......right now he set me up with ai suite v1.o614..(turbo v)..so i can save the overclock and go back to default with the click of a button, so i have less chance of stutters on fsx......when he tried to adjust the overclocking higher, comput would crash......i thought there would be a higher performance cpu which would be compatible with my motherboard....that is...one that would make a difference regarding stutters...even up to 3.6 helped alot....

There is nothing wrong with overclocking if you follow a few simple rules and read a few guides so you know what you are doing and why.  If someone does not want to overclock that is there business, but I see no reason for them to spread fear "overclocking is like jumping out of an aeroplan" and doubt and that is exactly what they are doing in this thread.  Also Fozzer just buys another computer, well you can buy a new computer or overclock the one you have and have just as good or better performance than the new computer without an overclock would give you at no cost to you.

If overclocking was some huge problem then people would not do it.  Before NickN left this site he helped a lot of people overclock their i7 920 / 950 systems.  You can do a search in the computer hardware & software forum for NickN and 920 or 950 or 960 overclocking then see all the threads that popup.  Nick is the one that helped me achieve that 4.2GHz clock that I posted above.  I now have a 4.4GHz OC on my current system.  I had zero problems getting my systems to overclock and have had zero problems with my systems after I overclocked.  There are numerous websites dedicated to people who overclock and people who want to learn.

You need to make up your own mind if it is something that you want to do or not, but do not let people tell you how bad or needless it is.  I see Fozzer who says that it is needless only runs FS9 and you will see that all the people who overclock on this site run FSX.  The hardware requirements of FSX are vastly different than what FS9 requires.

I have already written a longer post than I wanted to, I just did not want you to go away thinking that overclocking was bad and/or was not needed, go search the other threads on this site as suggested above and you can read how much better FSX runs after overclocking.  Since I refuse to get into endless debates over pointless opposing view points this is my last comment in this thread.

I know I'm a silly old moo... ..., afraid of my own shadow, when it comes to taking risks... :-/...
