So I bought another internal Hard drive...

I currently have 3 internals already. 1 is a 320gb SATA, and 2 are 80 gb IDE's.

I just bought a 250 gb IDE for 45 bucks at my local computer shop on my way home from the grocery store.

I am going to replace one of the 80gb IDE's with the 250. I figure I will store the 80gb drive with stuff that I will store for long term (home videos, pics, and FS stuff)

But I am wondering what the probibility is of data becoming corrupt on a drive that is not plugged in? I will not plug the drive in for probably years to come. The next time I will use it, is the next reformat I do.

Will the data last that long?

What is the shelf life of data in a unplugged drive?

Thanks!!

Shouldn't have any problem, as long as the disconnected drive is well cared for. I would store it in a static-proof bag, and put it somewhere it won't get bumped. As far as how long data stored on an unused drive can last, I'm no expert, but I would imagine indefinately. Provided it doesn't come in contact with any crazy magnetic fields. (big speakers etc.)

Like Groundbound says, as long as it is stored sensibly and in a suitable environment (the specs will be on the sticker on the HDD) then it should keep the data indefinitely.

ok thanks for the info guys! I have the proper anti-static bags so it should be good in there...

I was just worried that the data would get corrupt in the same way that a clock looses the time after a power outage (when it doesn't have batteries in it lol)

But it sounds ok, I have looked else where as well, and I am glad I got the new hard drive! I can install FS9 now!!

I would love to get the extra buttery smooth frame rate!
