Advice on new monitor please.

Hi guys.
I need some help deciding what new monitor to purchase. As you can see from my sig I have a good graphics card which is wasted at the moment on my 15" advent monitor (a hang on from my previous PC) I'm looking at going to 22" or 23" but apart from that I'm clueless. Wide screen, LCD, LED, what type of connections etc. I generally find myself preferring Samsung for my TV viewing but I'll consider anything.
Any advice would be welcome.

Zaphod.

I don't know a whole lot about screens... but:

Don't bother with a CRT - they have been phased out for a reason. Instead get a LCD screen. You might hear talk about LED screens, but these are usually just LCD screens with an LED backlight.

Make sure it supports DVI and has a native resolution of 1920*1080 or 1920*1200 (the later is preferable).

120 Hz screens are users who think that 60 Hz is not enough or want 3d glasses to work (only some applications support 3d and you need a nvidia 3d vision glasses).

There's also two kinds of panels, TN and IPS. IPS has better quality but is much more expensive, there is a reason some screens are $500 and others are $200. Quality.

You might hear talk about response times and contrast ratios. But these can be misleading because they can be reported in different ways so I recommend reading reviews of the screens you're interested in or asking someone who knows a lot about screens.

NNNG thanks for the quick responce. Yes, contrast ratios and responce times were two of the things that I've been confused about. Also some monitors have an HDMI input while others only have DVI. I believe my graphics card can output HDMI and DVI-D, but which is best?
Also do I need to worry about the distortion which may occur in widescreen when in cockpit view?

Best.

I have a Dell ST2410 Digital 24" LCD and I love it. It has both HDMI and DVI. I have no distortion in cockpit view and have changed the FSX.cfg entry:
"WideViewAspect=False" to True. I just wish I could afford two more of them.

HDMI basically equals DVI with sound capability. Get either it doesn't really matter just make sure your graphics card supports it.

I started out with DVI because an HDMI cable did not come with. Then my son brought me a HDMI cable and have used it ever since.

Is there any difference between DVI and DVI-D or are they two names for the same thing? My Graphics card has two DVI-D sockets and one HDMI.

DVI is DVI, you don't need to worry about all the technicalities and all that. Your card is pretty high end so it supports all DVI iterations.

For curiosities sake do you have the MSI GTX 480 Lightning variant? Cause that card kicks ass, best GTX 480 by far.

Not sure about the Lightning variant. My son-in-law built the PC for me with FSX specifically in mind, but when I first used it I only had FS9. I was so blown away by the improved performance in FS9 that I didn't bother with FSX for several months. Now I am enjoying both. My ultimate aim will be to have three matching monitors, but time will tell.

Are you interested in 3D?

If so, buy yourself an NVIDIA 3D vision kit and an Acer GD235HZ (23.6" full HD LCD monitor). It's rather new and the reviews are pretty good.

I would highly recommend it for you as FSX is said to have excellent 3D capabilities and you have a great GPU for it.

If the price is a bit high, remember you can get good prices on Ebay. ;)

I just recently bought the Samsung BX2331 23" LED.

http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/moni ... 3X3HKFY/ZA

It comes with the HDMI cable. You could also check user reviews on Newegg. It is quite a popular screen.

They are very effective, looks awesome and the specs VS price is wicked. 5,000,000:1 DCR & a whoping 2ms response time.

I came from a 19" LCD Samsung with no bells & whistles so the new monitor makes me a really happy camper.

I love to activate Magic Colour and set it to full when gaming, looks awesome.

Goodluck in finding the right monitor.

This looks interesting. Or it will when you get rid of those stupid and expensive glasses. ;D.
$311 for the monitor and glasses. You would need to sell a leg cause you dont need them to play comp games, And you also dont need a kidney, lung, a few fingers... Teeth. So you can afford it easily :D ;) ::).
