amd cards and frame rate issue - fsx

Postby coreservers » Tue Apr 12, 2011 3:50 pm

Hi there
I've recently upgraded my graphics card to the factory overclocked 5870 vapor x.
I have a core 2 duo 3gb processor and 2gb pc8500. However I'm suffering (even on low settings) between 5.5 and 8 fps!
I know fsx is a processor heavy sim, but I think I should get more for my bucks.
I alos know folks will come on here stating "should have got an Nvidia", well I'd treid the gts 450 and it was appaling, worse than this in fact.
This card is great on medieval 2 total war, pro evo soccer  and silent hunter 4. but fsx seems to hate it.
tried the settings sticky also.

You should be doing a lot better than that!

I'm running the 5770, and flying the default 737 never seems to drop below 20, stays pretty much at and near 30fps.

Even the PMDG 744 is smooth at 15 to 25fps, even maxs out at times, (set to 30) with FSX sliders set very high, (almost maxed there too!), with traffic near 50%.

Did you do all the recommended tweaks, (had to ask, sorry!) defrag and all?   ::)

What settings in the CCC did you use?

I can't remember, does FSX have an FSX.cfg file like FS9 has? If so, delete it and let the sim build a new one with the new card's info. Might help.

I dont think there's an fsx.cfg file. but there may be a deletable config file, I'll have a search. I can always re-install it

Are drivers properly installed?

Make sure light-bloom is off and water is set to 2.0x low (or lower).

I get fairly average performance with my system, but still MUCH better than what you're getting,

There most certainly IS an fsx.cfg file. The location will depend on your OS. Check out the FSX FAQ at the top of the FSX forum. http://205.252.250.26/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?board=FSX

Well so far. I've completely de-fragged, not sure if it was required but did it anyway. recreated theh fsx.cfg file. and set a china airways 737-800 at the end of edinburgh's runway. just sitting there. no movement and got a grand fps of 4.5.
tried all of the tweaks, have set to as low as reasonably possible, but now it's taking 15 minutes from Fly now to accessing the flight!

I think a complete reinstall is next.

Try latest graphics drivers.

Make sure all your hardware is running at its rated speed.

Hmmm.....after doing all of NickN's suggestions in order, and defragging with O&O after any system changes;

Here's my settings, don't know if they're applicable to your card but ya never know!

CCC ver 11.2

Good thuoghts. I recently upgraded to a 750W PSU, with silent fan, lovely and quiet. but I honestly didnt consider the ram issue.
I'm using Xp pro 32bit but will check task manager.

dude with that computer you should be screaming. it's really strange because my laptop with intel gma x450mhd in Miami intl I get in cls a330 around 25-30 fps. Read the PDF file in the link it's by one of the guys at aerosoft the people who do tours just read and you'll probably get 50-60 fps http://forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?showtopic=30796

turns out my cpu had entered an automatic powersaving mode. I think the last bios flash did it. reset that to manual (off) and now am indeed screaming at between 28 and 75 on unlimited
