Is my Hard Disk on the way out?

Postby Stewy44 » Fri Apr 22, 2011 4:25 am

G'day guys,

Quick question, lately, my computer is locking up and the graphics go all green and distorted - especially with FS9.

After resetting the computer, It starts the "The data in this volume is being verfied and repaired" process and takes about 40-50 minutes.  Sometimes errors are found, sometimes not...

I read on the internet that this may mean the hard-drive is close to failure - although it happens a LOT more with FS9 and much less with ArmA, gerneral internet surfing, MS Office, etc.

Any advice guys?  Do I have to replace one/all of the Hard Drives?  Can it be done at home, or do I have to take it in to the shop?

I'm running W7, Intell i7 @3.33, 2x Western Digital 300G Veloci Raptor HDD in RAID 1 (mirroring)

Cheers

try a manual chkdsk /f then a chkdsk /r will take ages, but it sounds like a faulty HDD sector, could well be about to go faulty

I suggest you to give a GOOD look at your PC power supply. Sometimes the source of the most strange errors and problems in a PC is this often VASTLY underestimated element.

Notice please that I am not telling you IT IS, but IT MAY BE. Before canning your maybe faulty HD, take another power supply from another PC... ask a friend of yours to lend his surely working PC's power adapter to you, for example, and try using that one in the place of yours for a while. If your problems persist, then you'll be sure it's your HD and can take steps towards a sure solution of your problems, if they stop then you'll be sure your HD is not the culprit and it is your power supply that needs to be replaced. :)
