Memorizing Moments....

Just a quick query, Chums...

...all to do with my continuing problems of Computer freezing and lock-ups... :'(....

When I change "views" in the Flight Sim when it is running, eg; panning round, changing direction, entering a new location, etc, is the changing Data handled by the System Memory, or the Graphics Card Memory?

Often, when I select or enter another view, it seems as though the "Memory", whichever it is, gets "confused", and the computer will lock up:
Frozen screen, Keyboard and Mouse inactive, etc.

So...which Memory Module is actually handling this changing Data; System or Graphics?

(At the moment I am experimenting with changing/replacing my System Memory Modules around, in case a module is faulty)... ::)...!

Any ideas, Mates?

Paul.

Pablo,I don't wanna be annoying just trying to help you ,find borrow another PSU ,If you were In Houston and I would be in Los Angeles I'd  drive all over or take a plane just to put another PSU to test and discard  your machine,I got the feeling the more you describe the more I feel is the PSU Unfortunately were too far from each other

Paul, I'd agree with Alrot! Nine times out of 10 the PSU is what causes this. It is very rare for RAM to fail, and I've never heard of a graphics card causing this kind of fault as when they fail it is TOTAL failure. If you can scrounge a spare PSU off someone it'd be a good idea ;)

Right-o', Chums...

I'll try a new PSU, see what 'appens...

Its a shame really, as the problem is completely random, and the comp will often run various programs for hours on end, with no problems...

I've had the 700 Watt "Storm" PSU for a couple of years now.

It was expensive at the time, and top quality, so I expected it to last forever...

..after all, I was built to last forever!.... :)...!

Paul... 8-)...!

Going for a new PSU.... ::)...!
This one..>>>

The changing data will most likely be handled by both the system memory and the graphics memory.

The graphics memory is a buffer for whatever you see there and then, the system memory is more of a peripheral vision which 'sees' everything in your current area.

If you believe there may be an issue with your RAM, you could try running Memtest and it may identify any problems.

If you load up task manager and put it on the performance tab it should have a graph of memory usage. If you leave that in the background, run FSX and then check if there's a memory surge straight after you do something that is freezing, you'll know that it is the RAM that is being overloaded with information. I.E, if the freeze isn't causing task manager to freeze too.

As for that 1000W power supply... What a waste! That will just cost you in electricity bills. It's expensive, too much power and the brand isn't one that comes to mind. I use a 550W Thermaltake power supply. Thermaltake, OCZ, Corsair and Gigabyte are all good brands. A nasty brand is likely to be the cause of most problems, and the PSU is something which is really really really bad to have break. CCLOnline.com sell good quality parts, including power supplies. A reputable brand 550W will cost you about

I've done just about everything possible to find the fault, apart from replacing everything in my Desktop case computer!
I reckon my existing 700 Watt; "Storm" PSU is plenty large enough, and is probably O.K.
My 2.3 GB of Memory checks out O.K, and all the running temperatures are well below their limits, with all the fans well oiled!
A new Installation of Win XP Pro, followed by a re-installation of my FS 2004, (which I use), doesn't prevent the very occasional "Freeze".
I've decided to put-up with the problem, unless it gets really unacceptable... ::)...!
It can be annoying at times, but there are far more annoying things; "out there".... ;).... affecting my daily enjoyment of life!... ;D...!

Paul....sing: "Memories are made of this..."... 8-)...!

Hello Ground...

Just completed a (very) lengthy Windows DOS CHKDSK (Check Disk) for errors, and allowed the program to fix any it finds.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CHKDSK
All came back with a clean report at the end of the process.

...will see what happens now... ;)...!

Paul..."Thanks for the memory...".... :)...!

P.S...I did a Google search for one of those "Free?" Hard Disk checkers. Tried one out...Came back with the report; "You have 10 zillion errors on your HDD...Give us loadsa money and we will fix it for you"..... :)...
...I don't fink so... ;).... ;D...!
