Computer Freezing...

Hello Chums...

I am recently experiencing "lock-ups" on my Computer, where everything freezes, including the screen, and the Mouse and Keyboard, etc, no longer respond, (sometimes with the usual continuous Audio Loop).
This is particularly annoying when I am in the middle of a Multiplayer flight.
It results in me having to "warm-reset" the Computer again, to resume the various programs.
Recently, as a trial, I noticed that if I ignore the lock-up, leave everything alone, and go for a sit-down and snooze for 10 minutes or so, the program will automatically resume from where it left off!
Due to the fact that I have my computer

Mine would do that from time to time as well. I'd always chocked it up to too much heat. (Ambient temps in my computer room often reach 95 F+ in the summer months) Heatsinks and coolers dusty?

All the Temps are OK, and the Voltages, after various checks, Alex...
(Aida32 program*).
All the fans are running at full speed (regularly oiled!).....and my PSU is a good "Storm" 700 Watt PSU, with large fans..(all seem to be running OK).

The funny thing is, the computer never shuts down, or gets the dreaded BSOD...it just ...freezes, like its just spotted a Rattlesnake!... :o...!
You can always tell, because the Num-Lock light will not toggle on and off!

I'll keep an eye on the PSU like you suggested, tho'... ;)...!

Take care... ;)...!

Paul....frozen in time... 8-)...!

Ground....did you finally find a permanent cure for the freezing problem?... ::)...!

It could caused by registry errors also. Or too many unneeded items in the registry.

Just had the freeze problem again whilst listening to music on U-Tube. The screen froze with the last note repeating like a machine-gun...
I left everything alone for exactly 10 minutes. There came a single Beep on the computer and the program carried on from where it left off....
..the trouble was, I could no longer connect to the Internet via my Modem to get my Browser up and running again without completely re-setting the computer, (and therefore the Modem and Browser)!
(The Computer has to be reset, to boot everything up again, from scratch!).
It gets more annoying by the minute...(or 10 minutes!)...!

Paul... :'(...!

RAM , Could be ram problem, I work fixing computers and I found many memory that began to gives trouble like this,(specially DDR400 DDR333)
if you have two devices ,Unplug and switch memory from one side to the other just to see if its a fail contact issue due to dust Or you have two devices disconect one then test it, if it does Plug it back and disconect the other only One can cause the machine freezes or crash .
Tell me something Paul, have you seen right before its shut down a blue screen warning?

I've got a few Registry programs which I use regularly, including pay-ware "Registry Mechanic", which never fails to detect and correct various problems during every run!

I'm a bit reluctant to format my HDD, losing everything, and reinstall my Windows XP, when the problem may lie elsewhere...(Hardware)!

Paul...Frozen.... Ice Cold in Alice.. ::)....!

P.S...On shut-down, I just get the usual "Windows is saving your Settings"...no other warnings...

DOS Boot-up, normal...Memory check is OK..
Start up, and shut down Windows, is normal, Alex!
I never get the BSOD... :)...!
I'm still a little suspicious about my "Memory Sticks" tho'..I'll try swapping them around/removing them, just in case!...!

Nope. Never found a cause or a cure. It would only happen once in a blue moon, but just as you described. Everything would just stop, and if there was a sound of some sort playing, it would get stuck in a rapid loop, like a scratched CD.

Alrot may be onto something there too. Let your machine run a few loops of Memtest. It's free, won't hurt anything, and will eliminate the possibility of faulty memory from the diagnostic equation.

I think that's well worth a try, Ground and Alex..

I still suspect that it may be a Memory problem...(getting faulty/confused).
It takes a time to run its complete check, apparently, so I will run it when I have nothing else to do at the time tonight...;)...!

Paul.... :)...!

Paul, do you have CCleaner? Before I got the new box, I got in the habit of running it each and every time I got on the net. And I still run it often. It helps when you clean out the cache. And it's freeware, the donation is optional.

Yep....

It gave me 3 free Trojans in the download... >:(...

I removed them with AVG and un-installed "C Cleaner", pronto!... ;)... ;)...!

I use "Easy Cleaner" now for all the various options.... :-*...!

..and "Registry Mechanic" (Pay-ware) for my Registry.. :)...!

Going to run the Memory Checker during tonight ....whilst I cuddle my Teddy Bear... :)...!

Paul.... ;)...!

"Cold starting" my computer regularly, before starting each new program eases the problem at the mo'!
.... ;)...!

Where did you download it from? I've used CCleaner for a long time. I never had a problem with trojans. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
