External Hard Drive Choices

As it is my birthday, I dropped a hint about wanting an external hard drive, roughly 1 to 1.5TB.

I thought the Western Digital My Book Essential (1TB) was really nice as it had password protection, but the reviews on it were really bad.

The other WD one is the WD Elements (1.5TB). Thought this might be the one, but I've done some more reviewing and this one seems to have a life of its own:

I've also looked at some Seagate models, both 1 and 1.5TB. I've heard different opinions about Seagate ranging from it's top of the line and that it's going South.

As far as my experience goes with hard drives, I've always used Western Digital.

Comments/Preferences would be greatly appreciated. There's no big hurry in getting one right now.

Chris

I've always used Western Digital, but I've only heard good things about Seagate, and Samsung. Not sure what you should get.

I've emailed my IT Guru brother-in-law to see what he thinks.

I've had a Seagate FreeAgent USB 500GB for a while now with no problems at all. Obviously, it is slower access than inboard, but not enough to be concerned for most usage. I used it to transfer [glow=yellow,2,300]all[/glow] my files from the old box to this one. I am satisfied with it. I think I got it from Crucial but I don't remember how much I paid.

Been looking for something similar, but the USB connection is too slow I think.

What if there

Thanks, Larry.
I seem to have put off wanting to get one after all the reviews I've read.

My brother-in-law uses a WD Passport for his external drive and he likes it.

Almost gave up on finding one, but I finally decided on getting the WD Elements 320GB external hard drive.

No software, smartware, crapware. It's formatted at NTFS. All you have to do is plug in the USB cord.

As of now I have regained 19GB of space on the internal hard drive. Also thought it might be a good idea to make a copy of Ground Environment Pro II. I have 160 ground texture sets built and I don't want to rebuild them again as it takes 15-19 minutes to build just one set.

It ain't the blue one that sorta mimics the look of a little 'notepad' is it?

I finally saved my pennies and went with an HP 1TB unit.

The WD 320GB I did have would not always start with power-up, or would freeze about half the time after it was a few months old.

Got tired of that real quick!
