well imo custom build would do BEST if you know what you are doing.
Which you cabn do research online now to learn how to build
You could get better specs for the same price if you know where to shop
But all in all that will run FSX. with the OMDG It should

You do not say what i7 you would get, there is a lot of difference between the i7 9XX and i7 8XX series processors.

Also 2.8GHz is a pretty low clock for an i7, most people who get i7's either overclock them or have the builder overclock them.  The memory is not all that fast.

On top of that $3,800 sounds really high for what you have listed.

It would be helpful if you would list the major components with brand name and manufacturer part number, CPU, CPU cooler (HS) and fan, motherboard, PSU, hard drives, GPU, memory and case.

I purchased the PC in my specs from MaxForce PC and only paid $3,117 that included an overclock to 3.6GHz, I jumped it to 4.2GHz after I got it.  The purchase price also included Office 2007 Pro and Win7 Ult 64b.  This is almost $700 less than what Alienware (Dell) is quoting you.  My price also inlcuded shipping.

If you are going to buy one because you do not want to build one, which I can relate to, I suggest that you email MaxForce a complete list of part numbers and ask Max for a quote.  I can highly recommend Max.

Get a computer store to build you a PC, or do it yourself. Alienwave, Dell... etc.... are terrible.

Go grab an i7 930,960, or 980X.

6 gigabytes of DDR3-1600 with a latency of 6 or 7.

SINGLE GTX 480, GTX 470, GTX 285, or Radeon 5870. I would get the 480

Nice Enermax, Corsair, or Seasonic power supply 750 watt or above

nice BIG case by silverstone, coolermaster, corsair, antec etc

ATi vs Nvidia......... depends what card you're talking about. My understanding is generally fsx favours nvidia and fsx only likes single graphics cards.

[color=#000000]I hesitated to respond to this thread, because I am far from an expert and I have had some problems. But, I do not think my problems have anything to do with the processor or Alienware. I think it is related to my settings and/or video card and/or driver. And I bought a 2.66GHz Aurora overclocked to 3.2GHz with 12GB of Triple Channel 1333MHz DDR3 ram, a 1TB drive and a 500GB drive, 2GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon HD 5970, Dell ST2410 monitor, Logitech Z-5500 surround and a Saitek X52 Pro for $3563.05 including tax. You do not mention monitor, speakers, or other accessories, but this is more than $200 less than the figure you posted.

It runs FSX fine. My problems are graphics related. And I think I read somewhere that FSX does not/can not utilize duel video cards. I know Nick says nVidea is better than ATI and I tend to believe most of what he says. But I'm still not convinced the card is the problem. In any event, before you make your decision, consider also that with a home built, there is no warranty except on the individual components. Tech support is limited. I do not consider myself knowledgeable enough to go that route. As to NNNG's statement Dell and Alienware are awful, I disagree. My Alienware has exceeded my expectations in all areas other than FSX, and I still think my problems have nothing to do with Alienware per se. And my experiences with Alienware tech support have been the best I ever had, bar none. Dell on the other hand is a horse of another color.

And things have improved a lot since I got Registry Booster and Ultimate Defrag.
