External HDD problem

Postby Sir_Crashalot » Fri Sep 25, 2009 10:32 am

Hi guys,

I have a 1Tb external HDD standing here on my desk. Until yesterday morning it worked perfectly. Yesterday evening however it probably crashed. It doesn't want to start up when I flick the on switch. I can hear the disc spool, after a few seconds I hear a loud click and that's it. Normally I would get a pop up menu with few options (open files, take no action etc) but now it does nothing of that kind. It doesn't show up in My Computer either. Looks like it doesn't go past it start up sequence.

Luckily I made a back-up of all my pictures on the HDD last week (some 3000 pics would have been lost otherwise). It also contains most of my music and documents (not important enough to worry about).

Any ideas on how to get this HDD back to life? Or should I consider it a write off?

Crash ;)

EDIT: Never mind, it's a goner. According to the guys at my local computerrepairshop it's broken. It's possible to retrieve the information but that will be quite expensive. And that's not worth it.

Crash ;)

Well, i also have some external HDD.The click you hear, well its not good.
But try this.Change the usb port wich the HDD is pluged. Some times that happens to me, but without the "click", sometimes they "bzzzzzzzzzz" and i know the onlly thing i can do its unplug the usb cable, and plug it again and it autostart and goes fine.
But once again i say, that the "click" you hear ITS NOT GOOD. :o

That's the first thing I tried. But like I wrote I had the HDD checked by a pro and he confirmed what I already thought. No problem though, I'm going to buy a new hard disc. Internal this time, maybe I'll throw in a new mobo and graphics card too.

Depending on how much they want to retreive the info, and if you have a "BEST BUY" around.   you could take it to them and it would cost roughly $100.00 USD to get the info put onto another drive.... say your C:\ or another External if you so choose to buy another one.
