PC can't detect modem

Postby aussiewannabe » Wed Aug 05, 2009 6:22 pm

After reinstalling a new HD, setting up Windows and about 26 programs, the last problem I have is that my computer can't detect the modem.

According to the specs, I have a PCI K56flex data/fax modem. Thought CPUZ might give some additional info, but nothing listed about the modem. I'm looking at some sites like http://www.modemhelp.org/drivers.html and http://www.modem-drivers.com/companies/801.htm.

I want to be sure that I get the right drivers. Would also like to know how to install them.

Chris

For Windows XP, download and install this exe :

Hope you use XP... don't seem to find for Vista... :(

If you need more drivers... click on the name of your PC... and then on drivers download page 8-)

Hi.
Im sorry to ask, do you really need a 56k fax modem?
The best you can do its to remove it, unless you really don have another choice. In our days all goes usb even the adsl net lines.
But you might have your reasons.
Instal is very straight forward just run the drivers, and windows will take care of rest.Just be aware if in the web page they tell you to install the drivers first and then instal the modem or you can do it wile the modem is already on the MB.
All the best.

Thanks, Alonso!
Yes, I do use XP.

The drivers are ready to update, but one little problem, and I may have forgot to mention it, there is no listing of Modem(s) under Device Manager.

Something else to be aware of is what's listed with yellow question marks under Device Manager:
Ethernet Controller
Multimedia Video Controller
PCI Device
PCI Simple Bus Controoler
Unknown Device

I tried accessing the drivers for the above through the Windows CD, but it couldn't do it. Rather, it suggested getting them online which I can't do without a modem listed under Modems in Device Manager.

This is getting rather complicated.

I see.... :-?

If you don't have any other network adapters, it should be there listed AS a network adapter... like this:

Image

If it does not appear as a network adapter, I assume it must be a PCI card. If it is, just try installing the driver onto the "question yellow mark" devices especially "Ethernet Controller", "PCI Device" and "Unknown device".... Don't worry about messing something out. If the driver is not the appropiate one, the computer will reject it.

That should be the easiest way to find the device ;)

When I installed my Broadband Modem (NO Router!), the installation and operating details (Drivers) had to be obtained from my Broadband Supplier as part of the set-up!

It supplies me with my Password, and Log-In details!...which I have to save safely if I have to re-install another Modem, or install the same Modem again!

Paul...With a simple ADSL, USB, Plug-and-Play, Modem...and no annoying Router!... ;)...!

Under Safe Mode, I ran msinfo32, expanded Componets, and double clicked Problem Devices. Exported them to My Documents and got this:

Using this website:

Let's start with the PCI Device:

The third link is broken.

Am I on the right track?

Under Windows XP Plug-and-Play....New Hardware Found...

It appears here...>>>

Giving Windows Modem Driver information, etc.

When you switch on it should report "New Hardware Found"... ::)...!

Paul...External, Plug and Play, USB Modem.

Well you unknow device is your modem.Have you installed you MB drivers?
Usually you can browse and find your instaled drivers on c:\windows\system32 or in the "drivers" folders, if you choose that path windows will find them.If not try to go control panel select hardawre click on properties of each "!", then choose update drivers, skip internet search and give him the path for your cd or to the windows folders.
And even, you might have to consider a pci bad slot, i know there isnt much space but try to move them from one slot to the other, then window will detect new hardware and you can browse where the drivers are.
Another question what service pack you have, some times SP3 gives that kind of problem but you can also consider if you not have it it might solve your problem.I can tell you my laptop cant find the wirless device if the SP3 is instaled.I had to search an update so i could have SP3.
Hope it helped.

I'm at another computer right now, but I'll look into what you two have suggested in a bit.

One thing I can tell you is that I just installed SP3 this morning. The driver issue started yesterday after installing a new hard drive and Windows XP.

Thanks,

Chris

YEA!!! It found the modem ;)

Thank you, sir!!!

Paul: I clicked on Properties for each one and the Manufacturer and Driver Provider are unknown.

I'm beginning to believe that some of these issues may be a PCI card that came with the PC. The original model was Media Center Edition. The PCI card has plug-ins for the TV. I've never used it.

Since the PC didn't come with a Windows CD, and I've put in a new HD and loaded Windows XP, I would bet that unknown device is that PCI card.

Incorrect! Those PCI errors disappeared when the modem was found.

If you don't have a specific Driver CD for the Modem....Let Windows search for its own Drivers, and install them automatically ...which is what mine does... ;)...!

(It will then list them in "Adapter Properties").

Paul.
