Jumpy HDD capacity?

I've got Vista installed on my Macbook Pro, on an 80GB partition.
The the capacity seems to jump around.
Not long ago, I had 28GB or something free. Which I thought was weird, cause I didn't have THAT many big programs installed.
I de-fragmented one day, though I didn't wait for it to finish (and I waited like 6 hours!).
Dunno if it has anything to do with that, but suddenly I noticed I had 38,5GB free.
Which I noticed had gone down to 31GB the other day, a day later up to 33GB, and now at 31GB again.
And I'm not installing any big programs, or deleting any files.
What could the problem be?

Dust!!! clean out the dust from the computer. Then pull out and put back in all the wires = to remake the connections.

I doubt it, I've had it for 1 1/2 months (not to mention the HDD is almost closed off).
And I'm not taking my MBP apart

Mine does the same thing, I think it has something to do with system restore checkpoints, when i go into system restore and shut it off (deleting the checkpoints in the process) I recover large chunks of my hard drive. If I leave it off my HD capacity stays stable. Give it a shot if you don't use system restore you've got nothing to lose.

Dust cannot influence hard disk size. ::)

Go into control panel, system and maintenance, backup and restore center, on the left side of the screen you should see create a restore point or change settings, click it and you will be presented with a system properties box. In the middle of this box it will say automatic restore points and below it it will say available disks uncheck the box or boxes and a popup will ask if you are sure you want to turn system restore off, click the turn system restore off box and all your system restore checkpoints will be deleted. I personally leave this feature off after reading that it can have a negative effect on performance but it is all a matter of personal preference, if you want to turn it back on just check the box under available disks and click apply and system restore will start creating checkponts as usual. Hope this helps.
