motherboard limits (cpu wise etc)

Postby 2fst4u » Tue Jul 08, 2008 6:30 pm

i figured out that my motherboard has a 775 lga socket (pentium d cpu installed now) and that it has a pci-e slot for graphics. obviously that means i can have a quad core cpu and/or a top of the range graphics card right? i was just wondering if that was the case or if there are other specs that i need to look at that might limit my hardware choice. any ideas?

The only other thing would be the PSU.

If you have a 500w+ PSU, you're completely safe, but under that then you'll need to check the graphic cards + CPU's Watt usage, along with the power the other PCI ports need.

Try and find the model number of the motherboard and look up the specifications, it may not accept the latest and greatest.

My old 775 only went to a p4 presscott......

Oh a Dell there should be plenty of info on that PC, goto dell support website and enter the model number found on the back of the PC.....it should give you info on the motherboard and compatibility.....

Not so fast ........ you said the bogey word ..... DELL. I would suggest reading http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2 ... 1214239941

I would hasten to add that Dell support will be absolutely useless unless you are buying the components from them at their over inflated prices.

PROCEED WITH EXTREME CAUTION.
