RAM upgrade...

Postby Anxyous » Tue Jun 24, 2008 2:58 pm

Hi, I've got the stock 2GB RAM in my Macbook Pro, and I was wondering if all I just need to buy another 2GB stick and insert it in the slot, instead of buying 2 2GB sticks?

4GB of RAM would be great.

EDIT:

Oh, and RAM is quite expensive, so how much better would FSX run with 4GB instead of 2?

If you can find out the exact RAM that you have (Manufacture, model #, speed, etc., etc., etc.) you should just be able to buy one more 2GB stick, but I would think that it would have to be the exact same as what you have now or your performance may degrade.

For 4 GB to work corretly you will have to edit your boot.ini file and add the  3GB userva switch.  Do a search for userva on this site for the past year and there are at least two or three threads.  Make sure you use the recommend value, I think that it was 2560 check the other threads to make sure.  Take it from my experience that works best, I tried a higher value and it degraded my performance, I would get OOM errors at major airports.

You know what Anxyous, I am sorry, but forget everything that I just posted, it just dawned on my that you have a Mac and everything that I said applies to a MS XP PC.  Sorry for the confusion!

Well, I'm running Vista on it...

I've seen vids where people just insert the RAM, and they're good to go.

I just need to know if I need to buy 2 x 2GB, or 1 x 2GB.

I still think if you can get a second stick of the same manufacture and model number of your first stick you should only need to get one.  If you can not find a second stick the same as the first then you will probably need to get two just to make sure they are compatible and there is no performance issues between the two sticks.

Well, Apple Store provides good info on it, I just choose my MBP, and it takes me to the RAM they got in store for it. But it's darn expensive.
