Core Speed

Hi guys,
I'm a little confused. In my rig I have the intel Q6600 at 2.4GHZ, however CPU-Z seems to be thinking the core speed is 1596mhz. Why is this? Surely it should be 2400? I have not fiddled with anything in the BIOS!
Thanks for the enlightenment!
Tom

That is correct. The cpu multiplier will be decreased automatically by speedstep. It decreases the power consumption and heat when there is no high cpu load. You can turn speedstep off in the bios, but I recommend keeping it on unless you are in the process of overclocking.

Why do you recommend keeping it on? I have a 750W PSU and a pretty cool case so I don't think it should get too hot. (It's the thermaltake soprano).

Turning it off, is like reving your engine to 4000rpm while sitting at a red light. When you run something that needs the extra RPM, it'll be there..

There is wisdom is Fozz's words.. but in your case, you're sitting on a CPU that is all but intended for over-clocking.
A little research, and a $50 fan later... and you'll ge the performance of a CPU that cost four times as much :)

I don't plan in overlocking at this moment in time don't worry Foz. I don't have a clue how to do it or what I am doing""
