Hi,

I need to know what type of ram I could use to upgrade a Dell Latitude laptop.  I want to upgrade it to 1 gb of ram from 512 MB.  I am not sure what type will work and what type will not though.  Im just looking for a 1gb ram stick somewhere around 20 dollars.

If anyone can help than thank you

Find the exact model of your computer and look up the specs on Dell.com. Download and run CPU-Z, click the SPD tab, look at the part labeled Max Bandwidth and tell us what is in that box.

The Crucial, Corsair and Kingston websites all have memory choosers, which you put your computer make in to and it will tell you the RAM you need.

Thanks tom,

I am bought a Dell Latitude C640.

I have a question, I am going to up the ram to 1gb, but what does the thing that is labeled something like 2.5MHz have to do with it? How does that effect the system?

i think you are talking about the Bus clock for the ram module
it indicates the speed at which it interfaces with the motherboard
higher is typically better, but you also have to check the speed your motherboard supports...

in your case, the best way to go is to find out the clock on your existing 512MB memory, and when you buy the new module, make sure it's the same number (i.e. if it's 1066mhz get another 1066mhz module) this way you reduce your chance of things going wrong

Hope this helps (and i hope i'm no mistaken)

Cheers
