As you would expect, the GTX is more powerful than the GTS, but is it justified for the price increase? I personally think not, unless you are running at VERY high resolutions. I love my GTS, it does me fine in all current games. Infact, if I was to buy a card now, I would buy the 8800GT (512Mb version) and save myself another $150 ;)

Just my two cents.....

Love my 8800GT 512mb. If you want high performance, 8800GT, if super high performance 8800GTX. 8-)

EDIT:
Take a look at the charts at the bottom of the page. You'd be better off with a GT or go SLI with GT or something.

Yes, I would go with the GT. Maybe EVGA. I say that because they have that cool step-up program and if you think, na I want something more powerful, just do the step up. I don't know how it works, but they have a webpage for it.
Also, FSX does not take advantage of SLI. I, and most of us, hope that FSXI will.

GT/GTS/GTX are pretty close performers, unless you start using high resolution with AA and AF. A 8800GTS outperforms a GTX in some tests, due to smaller die and higher shader speed.

I think the 8800GTX came out with 320/640MB GT/GTS- there was a big gap between each card, then the 512MB GT/GTS came out and much faster than the 320/650MB, and now closer to GTX.

As I read somewhere, the 8800GT is 90% performance of the 8800GTX, for about half the price.

What is the rest of your rig specs? CPU and RAM?

I've got an 8800GTS 512 and I'm really happy with it.  These are the settings I am running, and I get 25fps in really dense city areas, and 70-80 everywhere else. I'm also running on Vista 32 bit.

Airplane setting is at Ultra high.  All of my weather sliders are maxed out as well.

As for whats best for you, I can't say. I thought that the extra performance was worth the extra $40 at the time.  Also, the card runs cooler and quieter. I got EVGA so overclocking is covered in the warranty. I also have the step-up option if I want it.

Note though, that my rig is overclocked a bit, and fsx really is processor intensive.

I have the eVGA 8800GT 512mb...the step up program makes you pay for the shipping, 15% of the current video card value is taken off and you have to pay the remaining on the new one...Bought this 8800gt for $240...9800gt would be...eh $350 I guess. You would be paying $120 or so to get it when the next video card is "available" also many more policies... :-?

Oh, I get (locket at 25) a steady 25 with everything maxed EXCEPT autogen which is just a lil lower on dense. With 8x AA and high AF.

I have all the sliders set to max and I think I'm doing OK. What I'd like to know is what is this "Target Frame Rate" thing? Maybe it's called something else, but you can assumably set it for the frame rate you want? I've got it at 75 or so (I think...). In any event, I get no flicker, stutters, slow-downs or lags of any sort. I like my 8800GTS cards-- both of them.

Only the G92 versions of the 8800 can come close to the GTX, you can tell which are G92 because first and foremost, they've got 512mb of VRAM instead of 320 or 640.

I beleive the G92 8800GTS can beat the 8800GTX occasionally.

CPU and memory is the key here

Putting that 8800GTS/X card with a slow processor is not going to achieve much

Lock at 25 or 30. Releases a load off your computer.

Try to experiment with framelock.... try values between 20 and 31, but unlimited may work better for you. :) I would suggest 24 or 31 to start off, however, framelocks that are too high may cause blurries on dual and single cores. Quad cores don't blur untill you're up to 500 knots.
