Computers don't like it hot

A salutary lesson.

Even the coolest parts of Australia can have spells of very hot weather. Recently Melbourne has had a series of days in the high 30C range.

My house is heated but does not have cooling.

The other night with the ambient room temperature above 30C flightsim ran as a hesitant stuttering irritating mess.  Even though I had a big pedestal fan pushing cooler air on to the case.

The next night we experienced a big drop in temperature and flightsim ran like a dream again.

I would think my machine (a quad 6850 and an 8800GTX) must be on the limit of fan cooling and may need liquid cooling - or I should buy a small portable refrigeration unit for the computer room?

I'd suggest an air conditioner.

Forget the computer, If I'm not comfortable I'm not doing anything!  ;)

I stay on the east coast of South Africa and a normal summers day hits 35-40 degrees celsius easily.

So I installed a Airconditioner, split unit, into the room where the rig is. I the set the AC on 21 degrees celcius (Anything below that gets the AC icing up and dripping water) with high power mode.

Now let me tell you something, it does wonders and sure worth looking into it.

Again one must evaluate the profitability, I mean if it only get hot once every blue moon then an AC might be a waste of money.

My Q6600 / 8800GT rig has been fine. :) Hot days are extremely uncomfortable however, thank god it's cooling down over easter.

Dr. Ozzy says "Pack a load of dry-ice in the bottom of the case, that'll sort it" ;) ;D
