Problems with Games Controllers in Windows XP

I have just finished installing XP Pro on my new computer, got all updates etc.

Now I want to setup my joystick so I plug it in to the USB port. I notice it appears in the game controllers list however it is listed as 3 axis 4 button which is incorrect, so I try to remove it. I click remove and get asked if I am sure, so I click yes. I then get an error message "The device you have selected can not be removed from here. Please use the device manager."

Ok I think, unplug the joystick and it disappears from the list. I then click "Add", select 2 axis 4 button joystick, click ok and I get an error message again "Your gameport or gameport drivers are not properly configured. Please consult the device manager."

Any ideas? All help greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Tom

When you click on Advanced in Game Controllers does it give you any options to choose between devices?
If not try the following;
Open Device Manager. Then double-click Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Right-click the entry for your USB host controller, and then click Properties. Look in the Device status box to see if it mentions any problems with the device, and then click OK.
Click USB Root Hub, and then Right-click the entry for your USB host controller, and then click Properties. Look in the Device status box to see if it mentions any problems with the device, and then click OK.

When I click Advanced, it comes up with "Select preferred device to be used with older games" and a drop down menu with only 3 axis 4 button joystick listed.

I have checked 3 other computers in the house, 2 others with XP Home and 1 with XP Pro, and they all chuck up that same message.

"Your gameport or gameport drivers are not properly configured.

That is the clue.

It's trying to setup a controller on the gameport, not USB.

See if your PC actually has a gameport, if so, you might wish to disable it in BIOS (if it is onboard sound) to avoid the conflict.

Maybe it's the game software itself? Or you are using a Gameport->USB adapter that doesn't function properly.

None of the PC's have gameports - I asume you mean the yellow ones (nowadays) with the pic of the joystick?

And it's a USB - gameport adapter on the end of the joystick.

So you see ..... don't you? The Error message is generated because it thinks there should be a gameport, something is fubar.
