I'd say best not to Dave, most external connections tend not to be as fast as internal. That said some will work just fine. What kind of drive and connection are you considering?

e-SATA is the connection you need, but as Ozzy said I'd keep it on an internal drive for best performance.

Obviously it all depends on how many addons you're going to put on it, but a 320Gb internal drive with just the OS and FSX will be far better than having it on an external drive.
As far as I'm aware there are no adapters e-SATA to USB, although a firewire connection will be slightly quicker than USB.

If you're looking at e-SATA unless your MOBO is compatible then you'll need an adaptor card in one of the slots to do this. USB is far toooooooo slow to run a game on an external drive with anything like performance better than a ZX-81 ::)
