I Hate to Jump on This Bandwagon, BUT...

Postby Groundbound1 » Sat Dec 29, 2007 12:32 am

My new machine is built and running GREAT! I always thought my old machine did pretty well with FS9, but man what a difference now.

From:

MSI K7T Turbo M/B
AMD Athlon 1800+@1.5 Ghz
756MB PC-133
ATI Radeon 9600XT (256MB) by VisionTek in 4X mode
350 watt Sparkle psu
Windows 98 SE

To:

MSI Neo-FSR (Via PT880)
Intel P4HT Prescott@3.0Ghz
2GB Kingston PC-3200 (single-channel)
ATI Radeon 9600XT (same one) in 8X mode
500 watt Ultra psu
Windows XP Pro

So really, the only thing left now is the video card. (Which is why I'm posting this.) Now that PCI-E cards have made the scene, I expect prices should start dropping off on AGP cards soon, so which one should I look into? Looking for the best bang for the buck.

Your thoughts?

Buying AGP at this point is going backwards ( to me atleast). PCI-e cards can be had for decent prices. But I'm guessing that mobo wont support it.

Nope. In fact, I went with this set up because of the agp slot (so I could continue to use the card I already had), but I get the feeling that it's has become the weakest link.

My lovely old system (and FS 2004) works perfectly with my AMD 2600+ Socket A processor, and my 2.3 Gig of PC 2700 Memory, and my super-dooper  nVidia 7800GS 256 Mb AGP graphics card....

.....But to upgrade now to a PCI-e card would mean throwing ALL that away.... :o....>>>>

New Motherboard.
New Processor.
New Memory.
New Graphics Card.

+ a Lottery Win... ::)...!

...equals LOADSA MONEY!

Paul....leaving everything as it is for the foreseeable future!.... ;).... 8-)...!
Win 8.1 64-bit. DX11. Advent Tower. Intel i7-3770 3.9 GHz 8-core. 8 GB System RAM. AMD Radeon HD 7700 1GB RAM. DVD ROM. 2 Terra Byte SATA Hard Drive. Philips 17" LCD Monitor. Saitek Cyborg X Fly-5 Joystick. ...and a Briggs and Stratton Petrol Lawn Mower.

Im pretty sure you can get a mobo that supports PCI-E and will support his Preshot and DDR ram. A fatal error was made to base a system off of an obsolete gfx card.
