lapping q6600

just lapped my q6600 (changed to a5s paste aswell) and the results are amazing, using a tuniq 120 cooler (already lapped) went from 30c idle to 28c, heres the big one! under full load using prime95 went from 55c-60c to 40c-43c. A massive drop in temp, cpu is already overclocked at 3ghz at 1.26v, what sort of speeds should i be aiming for, any ideas? heres the spec

Your temps look like you are using speedfan, in which case they are inaccurate. You need to use the intel TAT tool to properly get your temps for that processor. As for what speeds, shoot for the stars kid, your board is going to need better cooling for a 4Ghz+ run, but a nice 3.6Ghz should be easy to achieve, and run stable.

no your temps went from 39c idle to 36c and your load temp went from 73c to 56c

There are only 3 temp monitors I know of that will read the intel diode correctly, all others are -6 to -8c off at idle and -13c off at load

TAT is one of them
Core Temp is another


No motherboard sensor reads the correct output for temp monitor software. it requires the right software to access the right temp. If you use Speedfan you must set a +13c temp offest on all core monitors

I'm still a little unclear about "lapping". Is it like lapping the valves in an engine, where as you use a super fine sandpaper or emery cloth to buff the surface of the processor and heatsink?

Yep, it creates a smoother interface between the processor and heat sink which can help with heat transfer a lot.

15 is too high, 13 is the Intel offset

it reduces the micro gap between the surface of the sink and the processor. It must be done using a flat 1/4 inch thick slab of plate glass which will translate that flat surface to the cpu or the heatsink base as you go along. It can screw up a CPU and heatsink if not done correctly.



also, 'blobing' thermal compound on is a no-no. It needs to be a onion skin haze or it will act as a insulator instead of a conductor

ive been overclocking after lapping q6600 and ive reached 3.6ghz (1.47vcore) idle is still 28c and full load on prime95 didnt go past 55c! could i go higher?

Well you could probably go to 4Ghz before you would need to change your motherboard Chipset cooling (trust me on this one, I've killed more than a few boards running high Mhz clocks over a long period of time) Also going any past that might resolve in needing to loosen up your CAS timings.
