I can't see why not, as would just about any DVD drive. That drive has an IDE interface, not SATA, so you are safe because all (?) PC's have an IDE interface, whereas some newer DVD's sport only an SATA interface.

I'd say it would work, but I'm an opponent of anything USB or External unless it's absolutely required.

The USB interface isn't the fastest, not that it would matter in an optical drive, but they also create more system overhead for each usb device used.

A need for an external device would occur if there was some reason why a built in solution is not practical.

BTW, leaving a dying or slightly disfunctional old Optical Drive in the PC can cause real problems as well.

I would also buy from newegg.com over Dell store. Dell tends to sell shite parts for top dollar.
