I'd like to borrow some expertise from you guys, as I dont have much knowledge in this area. I currently have a Sony Vaio PC(check specs in sig) with a Pentium 4 3.0ghz processor, and I'm thinking about upgrading to a newer processor.

1. Any recommendations on which particular processor to buy? ($300 or less is my limit at the moment)
2. Are they compatible with my PC? (is it a simple- remove one, install the other, or is there more to it than that)?
3. Any other issues I may be missing?

From what i believe, the processor will have to be compatable with the motherboard, for it to just be simply changed over

If you've had that computer long enough to want to upgrade, I'd imagine that it's a socket 478... which means at 3.0ghz, you're already at the top.

If it's a socket 775, you might be able to go with a P4 3.8ghz Prescott

But that gets into the gray area of whether that money would be better spent toward a new computer, because in my (relatively naive) opinion, your video-card is already the bottleneck. By the time you upgrade both the CPU and v-card, in what's now a dual (if not quad) core world, it might be best to wait and go the whole nine yards..

Ok.. I did a little research... your computer "should" have an ASUS  PTGD-VX motherboard, which has a a 915 chipset. It is socket 775, but not dual-core capable..

If for some lucky reason, it has a 945 or 965 chipset (I saw a couple of stray links claiming their Vaio PCV-RS720G had those chipsets), it will take a Core-Duo CPU...  Not likely, though..

Thank you sir (and Stuart), in that case, I may just keep saving my pennies for a new system lol.

Doesnt seem worth it at this time, because I DO need a new video card as well, and any VC upgrade (from what I have now) would require that I upgrade my power supply also...
