But a few questions first:

1.)  I'm going to upgrade to Vista, but I've heard that you can't use more than 3 GB of RAM with Vista, so would it be worth it to get 4 GB or just get 2 GB for now?

2.) I'm thinking of getting the E6850 processor, but should I consider quad-core instead?

1. If you get the x64 version it works with 16 terabytes of memory. The 32bit version must be edited by using a command prompt in Vista and run a line of code in order to enable greater than 3G use:

Dont set it any higher or you will probably crush the OS address. Even 3072 is really pushing that way too far in my opinion, but try and see. All that can happen is you crash and reboot


that is why I suggested 256 and 128 increments and not bigger jumps

The error you may be seeing is not OOM for the game but OOM for the OS, in which case the original number needs to be lowered to allow more address for the OS itself. The first lower value I would try is:

bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA 2432

and drop that in increments of 128

Thanks very much Nick, it's greatly appreciated.  The quad I'm looking at is the Q6600, which has a slower clock speed, and a lower FSB speed, but will it still perform better than the E6850?

Vista has critical updates for memory problems and performance. They will be included with SP1 due out in January but you can get them manually before...

The difference is the GHz stock rating. If you bump the FSB up to 1333 the Q6600 is running just over 3GHz

Its apples to apples. It depends on your level of working with a computer.

The majority of the processing in FSX is done on the first 2 cores, the first over anything else. Any cores above 2 get autogen and terrain threads. All AI traffic and other processing is done on the first 2 cores.

That's exactly how I'm running my Q6600: FSB 1333 and it's clocked at 2.99. And still with the Zalman 9700 it doesn't get hotter than 45
