I bought a laptop today and a belkin wireless router.
Can anybody help with regard to securing/encrypting my wireless network so nobody can hack into/steal my bandwidth/internet connection?
It says on Belkin's website that I need to access my router via my Internet browser.. how do I do that?
Other than that it works fine, however when I search for networks I get a list with 3 or 4 networks (my neighbours probably) all of which are secured/encrypted..apart from mine :P
All help greatly appreciated,
Rob.

Your router will have an ip adress, it might be in the pile of paper that came with it. Mine is 192.168.2.1, could be different to you. To access the router from your laptop you simply go into IE/firefox, and type the IP adress into the address bar. You'll have to log in, this info will be found in the paperwork. On my router, I get a nice admin panel up, with a section on the side underneath "Wireless" entitled "Security", but it might be different with yours. From there it should be mostly self-explanatory

I have a Belkin N Wireless Router.
On the computer that the router is connected to through the eithernet port get on the internet with explorer, then in the address bar type in, 192.168.2.1 and hit go or enter, what ever.
There you will see all the options and it explains all of them to you.
Your address should be the same but check your manual. Once you get in you if you want can use a password if you want.

Thanks for the info lads, it's been a big help.
I still can't set a password though, my network is still "unsecured". I'm waiting on an email from Belkin, hopefully they can point me as to what I'm doing wrong :P

Are you able to enter and save the password on the belkin? if yes, try 2 things, 1 take the power off the belkin for 5 seconds (just pull the plug) then restart your computer. check and see if the connection that you see is actually yours.
After doing that is your laptop still capable of surfing?
If possible can you put a screen shot of the set up screen of your belkin? the one for your password that is

Rob .... I trust you are using WPA encryption.... Have you managed to get onto the setup page for the router? .... IP address should be 192.168.0.1 Type that into your browser, all your settings should be accessable from that page.
Check out

Rob .... I trust you are using WPA encryption....
Well I wasn't, but I am now :P and that was the problem. Belkin recommended WEP encryption, which is why I couldn't find a passkey solution. As soon as I switched to WPA, bingo... secured wireless network. :)
Thanks to everybody for all your help!

Whats the difference between a WPA and WEP key?
By the way, I'm currently at a party with my laptop, surfing the net on the host's unsecured WiFi network ;D
