Internal or external?

Hello all! Well, I'm going to break down and buy a second hard drive (long overdue). I was wondering which is the better move : Internal or external? I will be using it as a place to put both files (photos), and games (Halo, BF2, FSX, ect). I've heard that externals have slow read/write rates, but I'm reluctant to buy a older IDE drive, as I'm going to build a computer whenever I get the money ($1500!). I know that my computer has two 7-pin serial ATA ports, but I don't really know what these are intended for. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I use externals mainly due to the ease of being able to back up data from all my computers on one drive. I can take it with me and hook it to any computer to copy files etc...
They may be slower but I don't use them for everyday computing (such as run a OS off from) but mainly as storage and back up.
You can however build your own external using internal hard drives if you wish.

I may go internal, because I need to fatten my space and I need fast seek times.
Now, is that SATA cable usable in my pc, or is it for cd drives?
