I have been out of the loop due op tempo and have been reading that intel may be a better choice than AMD now days.  I want FSX to run like a champ.  I have ran AMD for ever and have been fully satisfied but would like onput on Intel vs AMD.

Intel, Intel, Intel! Intel has the best cpu's you can find. Right now AMD is not even close to competing with Intel in terms of cpu's. If you wanna run FSX 'like a champ', then you should go for an Intel Q6700 @ 2.66 per core (available after July 22nd) which will cost $530, or, if you want the absolute extreme performance, go for an Intel QX6700 @ 2.66 per core (same as the Q6700 but with an unlocked multiplyer) which costs about $900 or an Intel QX6800 @ 2.93 per core which costs $1300.

YIKES! Those are expensive :-(

I'd doubt my motherboard could handle those kinds of cards.

id wait awhile...if you can if im right amds new processors (phenom i think they are called, not sure though) will beat intel, and if not itll cut the price of the intel processors

although it depends on how long you can wait

My thoughts on waiting:

There's always new technology coming out, all the time!  Always!  And the current technology will allways drop in price, always!  If you want to wait for the next greatest thing, conceivably you can keep on waiting because when the next greatest thing is released, something better will be announced.  My thoughts, look at what's currently out, do your homework and make the purchase that best suites you.  Then, *very important* don't look at technology prices for the next 3-4 months, because guaranteed, you'll see how you could have gotten something better if you waited.

[Update, July 16, 11 am. In its announcement for the new Core 2 Extreme QX6850, Intel has dropped the first details of its pricing moves. The QX6850 will be $999 in 1,000-unit tray quantities. The QX6700 will drop from its current $999 to $530. No word yet on the Q6600 or QX6800.]

QX6700 will be 530 and the retail probably right around 590-610

with the multiplier available, thats the best bang for the buck

you have to have a need to overclock for the multiplier to be of value, otherwise you may as well go with the cheaper slug




INTEL is the way to go for FSX

You want the fastest speed, the most cores running the fastest FSB on the fastest memory speed possible (also lowest memory timing)

If you want to have "full" support for the next gen of processors from intel, you better get a P35 chipset motherboard, OR wait till August for the X38 chipset which is what I am doing. I will also be going with DDR3 and not DDR2. The z9 Micron memory modules that will do 7-7-7-12 @ DDR3 2000 1T

Yes there is always thwe next greatest thing beeing announced thats why it's a game of timing. Buy new tech to early and it may have quirks, to late and the new stuff is here. Find the right slot and you are a winner. Buying now would be to late in my book.

About waiting though, you have two chip types to choose from:  The Intel Penryn, or the AMD Phenom.  I, personally, think the Penryn will win, because, although today's quads are really two duals slapped together, Intel have really got the quad-core business down.

No doubt, Intel will probably win...

AMD's only chance at recovering now, is to turn into a graphics firm, and just let Intel have it's domination over CPUs...

Well AMDs Barcelona comes first I think. Anyways the worst thing ever for you as a consumer is AMD to leave the CPU industry. That means we end up back in the P4 days where no new tech is ever introduced. Half the reason Intel is doing so well today is because AMD implemented new tech that forced Intel to change. As much as the fanbois would like AMD to go down the sh1ter they wont like it so much when Intel has less of a reason to have price cuts or generate new fabs. Two words for that mess: F&%k That

Barcelona is server, Phenom is enthusiest


and I think its not just going to be about the processor because Intel will finally be incorporating their NB into the wafer, like AMD did years ago. Intel has a habbit of copycat on AMD and improving it a few generations later. They have been doing that since AMD started years ago.

I think it is going to come down to the new motherboard bus chipsets that are slated to allow insane communication speeds from the memory to the CPU and that opens the flood gates for the video card, which must also be designed for that bus. The R6xx-R7xx ATI already has that design in its core and just waiting for the AMD chipset due out in November to unleash it.

ATI/AMD already did 1 teraflop back in February with the Barcelona and the new chipset on 2 ATI R600 cards. The get the crown for that feat.

I am not going to call one or the other as the winner at this point, but if you want what is King today,. its Intel

Yes Barcelona is a server chip but it is still first out the door on AMDs side. I think AMDs strategy is to realease the "slower" 2 Ghz server chips fvirst and see how well Intel does with their desktop offerings. If AMD sees that their chip beats it then they will throw it out the dorr as well. If not I think AMD will try and keep tweaking before they send it out. AMD also has a lot of big company pawing at the doors for the server chips.

They never have had on on die chipset but they do have an on die memory controller. AMD is also introducing the 4 lan freeway bus to the gpu and ram increasing bandwith exponentially. Also I read that the FSB will be eliminated some how in the whole scheme. But you support my point, Intel has only gotten somewhere because AMD has made the tech and forced Intel to do the same. If not for Intel we would prolly still be using 32bit Single core P 4s lol.
