I have to relate this experience to those struggling with sim problems.

HERE, HERE!!

After reading a couple of threads NickN was/is involved with, I changed my supply and noticed the same things.  Now my machine runs as if it's made of iron, compared to fluff!!  (if that makes sense...)

All I will say is this

CPU and tower temps DROPPED 3-5c, stutters REDUCED significantly, strange reboots and other hard stress performance errors STOPPED.

Yeah... I forgot to mention above the OBVIOUS temp drops on the CPU and Mobo sensors that I got too.

And I have not yet had a crash or hang in flight sim since the new power supply went in.  It has not been long enough for a definitive test of that.... but ...... I'm anticipating that the "strange" crap that fs2004 occasionally threw at me will stop too.  We'll see with time.

when I bought it, it was $499.00 and worth every single penny because it will take me through at least 3 upgrades and anything I throw at it. $414 is a DEAL

You count up 3 power supply upgrades and take into account you will need to raise the output by 2-300 watts each time, PLUS the quality that goes into a using like that which uses solid state capacitors that DO NOT degrade over time and the output drop like normal PSU's and sir, you are paying the same if not more over the time that PSU will have a useful life.

Why not enjoy the system without heat, stutters or crashes and be able to run it faster, and, at the same time have it cost LESS in electricity because the unit has the rating it does.

Over time, I win all the way around

500 bucks is what I would have paid, or more, for the same results in a 5+ year period and I may have had to deal with the other problems using the cheapo units to get by. I paid 160 for the 600watt unit that was crap! Multiply that out x 3 and keep in mind you have to raise the watt rating each time so it gets a bit more expensive for each upgrade.

By my searches for hardware purchases next month and looking over the requirements, the power use is not going down, its going up!


Where did you get the idea that the next gen of video cards and motherboards was going to reduce power needs?

Yes, they are making the parts more efficient for what the DO, in other words you will get much, much more calculation power for the power use but that does not mean the amount of power needed will be reduced! It means you will get double the speed but it wont cost double the power like it did in the past but you will still need to buy a PSU if you expect to move to DDR3, the next processor and video card generation.

What you will get is a high jump in calcualtion and render ability but with less jump in power needs for that increase as seen in the past.

By the end of next year the 850-1100watt PSU will most likely become the NORM

One other thing. Most people dont know what they are missing until they get a high quality or correctly spec'd PSU into their system. El-Cheapo PSU, means EL-Cheapo performance. Most accept their system is running excellent and dont realize how poor it actually is.

Like when you use NickN's Windows and defrag list... after following that list, you never knew your system could run like that because you never saw it run right to begin with.

My system ran before, my system runs a bit better ever after.

There *is* an improvement, but most notably for the 08/15 user who runs Norton, IE and Win XP's "Luna" shell...
