It's alive!!! It's alive!!!

Finally... Build #2 is up and running. Turns out ithe problem was, in fact, a bad mobo. The new one arrived the day after I left town for seven weeks; been daydreaming about getting this system finished.

Almost had a heart attack when Windows would not install... until I realized I had a dead DVD drive in there. Had to swap it out for the new one in Build #1. Phew...

Of course, this system's already pretty outdated, but it will serve, methinks. I'll use it pretty much just for FS9 (and maybe FSX later), but I may use it for media creation and editing.

It should update to Vista without much fuss, but that will be a while for me, if at all.

Still formatting (I'm online with Build #1 now, courtesy of a decent little KVM switch I just got), but as soon as it's done and I have the necessary updates and drivers installed, I'll be slapping a brand-new copy of FS9 on there. Very excited, especially as I haven't even flown the sim in almost two months!!

Not that anyone will be impressed, but for the curious, here are the specs:

Mobo: Asus P5B Deluxe
CPU: Intel E6600 Core 2 (2.4G)... with a Zalman 9500 cooler
HDD: WD1500 ADFD Raptor
GPU: eVGA GeForce 7950GT (KO)
RAM: 2X 1GB G.Skill DDR2 800
PSU: Antec 500W Smart Power

The case is a pretty cool mid-priced Rosewill unit; forgot the model number.

Glad you got it sorted... that's still quite a powerful rig there.
FS9 should run like a dream, fully maxed.
Enjoy!
Oh, and post some screenies when you get the chance  :)

So far so good... I can easily get 40+ fps with all sliders at max; with default aircraft it does get knocked down to about 39 over areas like NYC, but I can live with that. :D

Haven't even tried OC'ing the card, and probably won't have to.

It's just amazing for me to be able to fly without all the lagging and stuttering... it's a whole new ball game. ;D

Only odd thing is that even with anti-A enabled at 8X through the GPU, I see a "shimmery" sort of effect at lower altitudes... buildings and trees show this odd sort of "phasing" effect. Not sure what that is, but I'm sure some experimenting will get rid of it.

I may be behind the times, but why wouldn't anyone be impressed? Would that system not be able to run FSX?

When I get back, I definetely need a new desktop computer, so I'm thinking about going all out and buying a Dell XPS. It's been so many years since i've built a computer, that I wouldn't know how to anymore... :-[

I said that tongue-in-cheek: I know it's a pretty slick rig, but it's nothing cutting-edge, that's for sure. If I were to start gushing about how hot it is, there are plenty of builders here who would scoff. I mean it's air-cooled, for God's sake, and only one GPU! And the CPU cost less than $1000! Junk!!
;) :D

I'm pretty sure it'll run FSX, but I want to stick with FS9 for now. I will no doubt try the FSX demo on this rig at some point. But right now, I'm eager to load it up with all my resource-hungry FS9 add-ons, and see if it still rocks the way it does now. compared to my old rig, the performance of FS9 on this thing is... orgasmic. :D

Don't be discouraged about building a new rig yourself- I think if anything, it's all gotten easier. The only major hassle is researching compatibility, although if I can do it successfully, anybody can.

Best advice I can offer is to go screwless with the case- seems a minor point, but this time around I was very, very happy I got a case that allows easy swapping of drives, etc.

Good luck, come home soon, and start building! ;D

I also love the feeling you get when taking of smooth compared to what ones old rig use to display, one get so excited you load all your other programs just to enjoy change   :)

It is also much better to build ones own rig, the research makes you appreciate and understand the system and its requirements & benchmarks much better.

I recently build my rig, also not top of the range, but atleast I get to fly in style  ;)

Happy flying...
