CPU Fan?

Postby Scorpiоn » Sat Jul 07, 2007 11:38 pm

How long can a CPU go without a fan?  CPU in question is a q6600 and cooler is a Zalman 9500.  The fan will jitter, but will not spin.  I'm afraid to deliver power again for fear it might burn up the MoBo (happened on my previous rig).  All I want to do is get into the BIOS and see if the fan is being given power.  I have powered the system twice for a period of time not longer than 3 second each.  I am afraid to try it any more.  VGA, and other fans spin.
The Devil's Advocate.

With the heatsink actually on it I'm sure you might get a few mins but I wouldnt try it, just replace it to be safe

Definitely don't risk it.

I had an old Celeron running for a few days solid before I realised the heatsink and fan had actually fallen off and were lying on the bottom of the case. It hit 110 degrees C :o

But no, the newer multi-core CPUs will not last long at all without adequate cooling. Replace the fan to be on the safe side.
