It depends.

There's several matters to consider.

For all your periperials, and ESPECIALLY your graphics card, are there stable Vista drivers currently available?  If so, go ahead.

Do you play online gaming that uses the UDP stack?  Definately NOT!

Just wait for SP1. SP1 is going to have a lot of the fixes that we have all been waiting for or needed.

Also remember that if you go vista, kiss flight simming goodbye. The best I could ever get out of FS9 on sheila was maybe 20FPS where as in XP I could get 60 (though I have it locked to 25) So if you want to sim or game in OpenGL my recommendation is not to go just yet.

Cheers

FS9 Runs fine for me with Vista.  I suspect your frame rate problems might be attributed to video drivers.  Have you made sure you have the latest video drivers for Vista installed?

On the other hand, that whole UDP matter seems like M$ is involved in strong-arm tactics.  If you do a google search on the matter, you'll find plenty hits, but they are from either bloggers or the folks who create the Killer NIC.  Every other site claims that the network game lagging is the fault of 3rd party video drivers, like that makes any sense.   ::)

I did find this link that did, at one time, discuss the Vista network stack problem.

http://www.vistaclues.com/reader-questi ... ows-vista/

I later went back to this site, and all references to the Vista network stack have been removed.  They are claiming networking lag is due to 3rd party video drivers, like that makes any sense.   ::)

Thanks for the input guys.  So you're saying I should wait for SP1...any idea when this will be out?  And will it make Vista run FS9 smoother?

Thanks again 8-).

Windows Vista uses up almost 512MB of Ram, therefore I wouldn't recommend it for people who only have 1GB Ram. I'd recommend it for people who have at least 2GB Ram.

Well, im planning to buy my new comp from Dell, and with Windows Vista, you can have 512MB Ram, and I'm like, who'd buy that? Well, ofcourse you can have 512MB Ram on Vista which acts like 128MB Ram on XP, but no way will it suit Flight Simulator.

The PC I'm soon going to order off dell has NVidia 256MB Graphics Card and 2GB Ram. For Vista, you even need to have a good graphics card for vista to run nice and smoothly, well apparently so.

Dcunning30, when you say FS runs fine for you, well do you mean that its not laggy, or do you just mean that it installs properly?

Vista doesn't suit everyone. Especially when Microsoft say "You spoke, We heard you" or something like that. When infact, Gamers are after performance, not appearance. I think if you just want the vista look, stay on XP and download a Vista Transformation Pack.

Thanks again,

With my PC, the Gateway GT5404,

http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/10093 ... 1sp3.shtml

and a GeForce 7600 GS with 512Meg, I have all the sliders turned to the max, and with the frame rate locked to 20 fps, yea I know it's a bit timid, my frames don't dip under 20, no matter where I fly.

Nice Specs.
Lucky, you got a 512MB Video Card  :D. The dell I'm getting will only give me 256MB NVidia Card. Oh well, with my Intel Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz and 2GB Ram, 256MB Video Card will do perfectly  :).
