The Overhaul

Every nerd's wet dream.  A completely new build.  My budget is circa $2000.

My ultimate goal is to have three separate computers.  Internet/music computer (moar than likely a laptop), heavy hitter (gaming, video editing) and storage (back up, ludicrous gigabitez).  Network will also be involved.  The storage computer will moar than likely just be my current gaming PC with moar megabytez.  I call it Operation: B0n0r ololol.

Right now, I'm focusing on mah heavy hitter PC.  Gaming of course, and I'm looking to get back into FS now that my previous gripe (craptastic scenery) has been amended.  Although I have become a CS addict.  I'm still having some trouble entering the realm of video editing, but it still interests me, and I have done a few conversions and stuff.

I will be giving up CRT, but only because mah old one was pwned by my laptop and nobody makes them anymore. LCD < CRT Alas, I must move on. :'( List is in order of most help needed to least.

Things Imma putin on mah list olo:
MoBo
GfX
CPU
PSU
RAM
HD
Display

Things I don't need help on, but would like suggestions anyway:
Case
Optical drives (2-4)
Key/Mouse (Saitek Eclipse II Final for keyboard)

Things I might/might not buy:
A new surround system

My current Sony SRS-D5100 has served me well, and I like it. :)

Although it will be a far off in the future purchase, I'm also researching for a new laptop.  Small-as-possible tablet while still packing some power.  I have my eyes around the HP t1000, I believe it's called.  But I can't get over the fact it's a HP! D:

Have a field day. :D

Looking foward to what Congo, CTJoyce and Nick will have to say. ;D

PS: I just now realized CTJoyce probably stands for Counter Terrorist Joyce. ::) Imma such a dunce.

Wait till later this year, as there is no real reason to upgrade now. The Core 2 duo and Geforce 8 both have no real competition, and will be outdated quickly. The applications they're designed to run don't even exist! When those applications exist, the Core 2 duo and Geforce 8 will have competition. Strong competition leading to faster designs and price cuts.

What's the point in upgrading now?

Eg1: Radeon X2k > Geforce 8
Eg2: Barcelona may beat Core 2. MAY.

I have to agree with Arnaage here... I'm not building a new rig until late this year early next year... Sure, a new PSU, DX10 mid range and maybe a sound card for this computer to keep it usable but I wont build new anytime soon. Look at upgrade options if thats possible, save longer, (A lot more to play with later on) The only thing I'll be buying sometime soon is a laptop.

Actually waiting until next year is kinda pointless for everything except DX10. Intel only has its second wave of Conroe and Penyn slated this year, and AMD is launching its quad core towards the end of the year. So April is the time to buy for intel, as that is when the Conroe price cuts are suppost to take place. As far as GPUs, the 8900 series has not been mentioned for release, and we still don't have a date from ATi for R600.

Buying right now is even more pointless.

Says you. The only thing in the rig that wouldn't be worth the cash is the early DX10 card. Since when is a conroe a bad thing?

PS: Don't get into a pissing contest over this with me, I can pee further than you can.

March/April is for mid range ATI/Nvidia I think. 8900 and 8950 as far as I know haven't even been announced for release date. (I may not be up to the current on tech so correct me if I am wrong)

Actually its going to be more like summer. Gotta think, mid rage cards are usually for kiddies who can't afford the top end stuff because their parents wouln't buy it for them. So said hain the summer, and will be thinking "what can I do with this shiny paycheck? GRAPHICS CARD!!!" So I would think that we would see them Juneish. Remember that the 7600 series didn't come out until 7900 did, and I doubt that ATi is going to launch the entire line of X2 cards in april, so midrange stuff you are going to have to wate a good amount of time for.

Conroe isn't really needed right now, when it will be needed, it will be outdated. Same with the G80.

You can go buy your E6600 now, wasting it on applications a 3.9ghz Pentium D can already do. When DX10 is out and established (Q4), I will be running a Kuma (Dual core clocked up Barcelona) paired up with some awsome ATi card. Then we'll decide who made the better choice, k?

no mid range cards are for those of us who live in the real world and have better things to spend several hundred pounds on!
