For FS9 your memory is too low. It needs to be at least 1 gig, preferably 2

Your CPU is very weak for a simulator. It will work but be very stressed

Your video card is not what would I would call great for performance either. You did not list the video memory. If its 256mb, its better but with the other system specs if it is 128, you are going to be restricted.

Your hard drive is very small. For best performance in software from the drive for scenery loads you want it to be no more than 50% full. You will be pushing the limits with that as you may add extra scenery and aircraft. Be sure to use a good defrag program such as O&O Defrag using the COMPLETE/NAME defrag sequence after FS9 is installed, which will make a huge difference.

FS9 with allot of tweaking will run but not with very high autogen and visuals. You will need to research how to set up the configuration file and sliders and be prepared to run it at not much greater than 50% (thats just an estimate, you may be able to do better with tweaks)

With your hardware FSX is out of the question with any decent visuals and smooth operation

No one here can tell you what settings to run. Every system requires tweaking in the sliders and manual edits in the configuration file. It requires research and testing which is one of the downfalls to the MSFS product line. Its a great learning experience but it does require patience and a desire to learn.

Your system is very slow even for FS9

I marginally disagree. You have a faster processor than I do. I'm running FS9 well on an old Athlon 1700, which runs at 1,100. I have run it well on 512, 768, and now on a gig of RAM. I have a hard drive, 40 gig, that is 76% full. My video card is an ATI 9800pro, 128 mg ram.

I'm getting 20+ frames, locked on 25 usually, and in non busy airspace it's pegged at 24.9 frames. In busy airspace it drops down into the low teens.

You will need to do some tweaking of cloud draw distance, and terrain complexity, but you'll get good flying.

First.. your running a 9800pro... hes no where near that performance

second, I dont disagree he cant run it, but the frames you posted, you never mentioned your settings and I know for a fact he wont get your fames with his video card.

I was not trying to be negative and I did tell him it will require tweaking and work... but unless he is a pro at setting up BIOS, hardware, Windows, drivers and FS9, my guess is he will get 1/2 the visuals and/or 1/2 the frame you will at the same settings.

By all means try it.. I never said it was hopeless but do not expect to get anywhere near what flaminghotsauce said in performance and visuals... you will have to significanlty reduce the visuals to get the frames he spoke of

reinstall? ... you had it installed before on the same computer?  How did it run?

I totally disagree. FS9 runs quite well on my PC. (see specs below)

You know for a fact? You may be surprised how well it runs on a secondary machine, then, with a generic 64mg video card. Sempron 2300, 256megs. 20 gig hard drive. That machine does the exact same thing with fps, limited to 25.

What you guys with monster machines and unlimited gaming budgets forget is how well it runs on slower older machines like mine. I don't run settings all the way to the right, but mostly. I limit cloud draw distance, and the terrain complexity, although I run the slider that does the buildings up pretty high.

What I do NOT do is change scenery files, airport sceneries, clouds or other weather sceneries, water sceneries, don't fly online, fly heavy iron, or use intense aircraft. I don't have trackIR, FSPUIC or whatever that's called, I fly mostly props and a couple of business jets. My sons fly helicopters. I am mostly running an ordinary install of FS. Very little tweaking. The Sempron machine is a complete virgin installation of FS, no tweaking whatsoever. Not even sliders. I installed it for the kids.

To put into perspective hardware-wise, I'm considering moving up to a p4 3.0, and a basic PCIe video card. My intention is to rebuild one of my computers for under $200, reusing components I have now. If I have to buy a more expensive mobo, I'll have to up that a bit.
