A little treat for me, and boys I'm going to 4Ghz!

I had some spare cash lying around, so I just couldn't help myself. I bought a Pentium D 820! Now you are probably saying to yourself "CT bought a dual core and not his precious Conroe?" Well since I couldn't find the ASUS 0905 BIOS for my board (they removed it from their site. Google for why) I was stuck with the Smithfield. The reason I plunked down the $90 for it was reading This article. After picking it apart I figured that if they can get a BO stepped 805 to 4.3Ghz than I should surely be able to get a BO stepped 820 to 4.1

We will find out next week how everything goes, and I'll be posting screens soon.

Cheers

Can't wait to see the results you come up with.  I've tried overclocking my 6600 to 2.9 already and it was fast, so I wonder what over 4 ghz would feel like. ;D

after reading more of the article, do you think you are going to need watercooling?  Once they hit 4ghz they said they needed watercooling.  But you probably can manage with the 9500 if you use SpeedFan and keep it running at 100%.

You can go 3.6GHz on the E6600 without even upping the voltages.

As for me, the CNPS-9500 should keep it at a cool 40* which I am fine with, as long as its running FSX at 30FPS I could care less.

And SpeedFan? Psh, I keep it running 100% all the time. My music drowns out the noise of the fans.

Yeah, well on stock cooling the E6600 starts to get a little hot when you hit about 3ghz, and most people find that you have to up the voltage a bit after 3ghz, so I'm going to wait until I can get a better CPU cooler before I risk going much higher, I still idle around 40s to 50s with the stock cooler, but I don't want to take any risks.

one other thing, that Pentium D seemed to be consuming a lot of power in their tests, so you better make sure your system can handle it ;)

To determine if we needed a new power supply for our test system, we also loaded the CPU in tandem with the graphics card. This produced a measurement of total power consumption of 512 watts at the wall socket! This might sound like a lot, but also requires that you factor in the efficiency rating of the power supply itself. Most PSUs have efficiency ratings of somewhere between 75 and 80 percent, which means that the components in our test system are consuming 384 W of power. Thus, those who have a 500 Watt power supply in their PCs can overclock this CPU without a second thought.

Trust me I've looked over everything, and the only thing I may need to do is change the multiplier to 17x to get 4Ghz.

That is same combo I plan on getting soon......a E6600 and a "CNPS-9500".
This will be on an ASUS P5B-e and will be a VISTA/DX10 sys.

I presenly have a CNPS-9500led on an overclocked AMD X2 4400 sys and it cools it fine.

I originally wanted something different for my new sys. However, after doing my research, I kept comming back to the CNPS-9500.

And the party has started. At the last minute I realised that I can't change the multipler to 20x on the 820, so I ended up getting the 805.

3.89Ghz (now 3.9) stable. 4Ghz soon.
