External HDD Sounds?

Postby Hai Perso Coyone? » Tue Jan 02, 2007 2:23 am

Hey all,
My external HDD is making weird sounds...It makes odd clicks sometimes and sometimes it appears as though it's rebooting it self...It holds around 400GB and still has 190GB free...I am starting to worry as all my games and music is on that drive...Is it something to wet my pants about? It's only just started to do this...I keep it on 24/7...Does that make a difference? Also, shall I defragment it?

Thanks,
Ashar :'( :'(

Clicking eh? Dead drive. Get your stuff off it, and replace the drive. You can do what you want to it, but if your hard drive is clicking its dead. You have 4 days at the most before it wouln't even read. Maxtor is it?

Anyway, the amount of time that you leave the drive on has nothing to do with lifespan of the drive.

Cheers

Sorry to hear that its relitively new. But yea, it happens to the best of us, dead drives suck.

This is strange...Now the noises have stopped...Yet the hard drive still works...I've made back-ups of the most important stuff in any case...Any other tips? :-[

Ashar, start duplicating like mad! Copy the files, burn them to dvd or whatever! My HD just died on me, not a happy thing! I'm afraid I lost everything. I was in the process of backing up to my My Book external drive when it happend! I only had one blue screen of death as a warning, the next thing I know the drive is gone and I'm unable to boot nor reinstall XP... the system just doesn't find any HD's! Luckely I have a partial back-up from a couple of months ago, so I haven't lost all my data...

Luckily, this is just my external HDD...My internal one that houses my OS and such is fine...This external one has my music and games...I backed up my music and the games, I can always re-install...So no worries...I don't think it should be dying already...It's only 8 months old...I wonder how... :-[

It may not be dying.... Thats the thing. My maxtor 120gb never died, sure it wouldnt register in windows sometimes but it never died. Made all sorts of funny noises etc, Only used it for 6 months before the pc went though. I hooked it up to this pc to get my data off it and it worked...
