Hard Drive Query

Postby gilly_is_alive » Mon Dec 18, 2006 2:15 pm

Which hard drive should I install FSX on.  I have a 100Gb HD on my laptop, partitioned into C and D (about 45Gb each).

Should I install FSCX on the C drive where all my windows and other proogram files are or on D?  Infact I could dedicate D entirely to FSX if it would be any use or any increase in performance.  What about purchasing an external hardrive for it.  Would anything like this affect performance?

Well, the default FSX installation takes around 15GB...So I suppose you'll be a little restricted once your drive becomes full...I'd suggest getting an external...I have FSX installed on my 400GB external one...It runs so-so on my rig, but I'm happy with FS9 as of right now ;) ;)

Thanks man, im not really worried about the space, just about the affect on performance at the minute.  I dont like to clutter up my sims with too many add ons that i never use, i just tend to keep the best ones so i dont see myself going over 20 or maybe 25 Gb with FSX in the future.

Another question though, how much will a sound card improve performance?  i run onboard sound on my laptop and was thinking of getting a soundblaster audigy for laptops (PCMIA).  Im not worried about the quality as i rarely plug speakers into my laptop but was wondering more on the affect on performance again.

Well, I'd get a soundcard as that will really boost the sound of FSX...It's best to have a loud roar of Jet engines on take off is it not? As for performance, I'd first suggest you list your system specs...I'd also recommend that you ask for Hardware help in the Hardware Board of SimV...Just scroll down the Index and you should see it...If not, ask a mod to move this topic... ;) ;)

i read somwhere a while ago (here at simv i think) that you should not install anything on your c drive other than windows.  put all other programs on other drives - d for exampe - and that way if you have to re-install windows, you wont lose all your other progams.  i have nevr had to re-install windows yet (touch wood) so i dont know if this is actually true.   8-)

Unfortunately this is mostly incorrect. Installing FS9 and FSX on a different drive will cause it to slow. I don't remember why, but Nick posted a long article on it.

As for putting all your programs on another drive is up to you.

You should only install FS9 and/orFSX on the same drive Windows is installed on.
Main reason being is that the sims need to access files stored in Windows itself, with the sim installed on a separate drive it will end up reading from 2 drives instead of one, which then common sense tells you slows performance greatly ;)
