This has had me bugged for a while...I don't want to lose all my precious pics or anything...Anyway...What exactly is the life of a HDD drive? Mine has been running for a little over 2 years now (Bought the PC in June 2004)...Also, I leave my PC on 24/7...I am not in the mood to lose all my data...Should I start thinking about a new one or am I safe for a few more years?

Thanks,
Ashar

The lifespan of a hard drive is very long. They usually have 5 year warranties. I have a 10 year old Fujitsu drive that works fine. If you're paranoid about losing your data, the best thing to do is backup.

Careful. A warranty will supply you with a new drive, it will not get your lost data back. A drive can last 10 years or it can die after 6 months.

There's no telling at all. SMART systems can give you an indication, but you could just as easily wake up tomorrow to find your hard drive dead.

Just get an external HDD and back everything up ;)

You also need to read the "fine print". Some warranties start on the manufacture date, others on the sale date. I have a 20-year old MFM drive still chugging it out. I've also seen many newer drives in big box and branded machines bite it between 6 months & 3 years.

Ofcourse you won't get your data back, that's why you backup if the data is important. I brought up the warranty because it roughly indicates what the manufacturer thinks of their product's lifespan.

Live it, learn it, practice it.

I have had professional solid state SCSI drives with a useable hour rating of 2,500,000 go out on me. BIOS chips which typically have a flash rating of 100-500,000 cycles or higher, out of nowhere: POOF!

Hard drives have a cycle life. That life rating does not mean it will run flawlessly within the cycle life. Everything from PSU quality to environmental conditions plays a role in that number which is specified based on all engineering test conditions remaining perfect.

I doubt a hard drive is going to go.... I run 1 250 gig with 2 partitions (I hate it with partitions but since it comes that way when I redo windows I cant fix this until I get Vista) and a secondary 160 gig drive for all my storage, So I am not really safe, but I run 1, 3 year old drive for storage, a new one that came with this pc for windows and the other partition of it for FSX etc..... I am planning to stick another 160 gig in (also 3 years old nearly)

Cheers, Gunny (My 120 gig maxtor was buggering up but I don't think it's dying)
