Another on of those threads!

Postby FlyinSolo » Mon Nov 06, 2006 3:13 pm

Ok guys I am in search of good advice here.

I am dying to play FSX but from hearing everyone's horror stories I decided to wait it out and upgrade. So here is what I am planning on going with: http://www.directron.com/gse76gs512.html it's a GeForce 7600GS 512mb video card. Think it will work? I am running a Dell with a 2.80GHz processor and 1GB of ram. Any other suggestions in the $100-$150 price range as I am just a poor guy? I have no idea what to look for in a video card so any help is appreciated!

I have never heard of Chaintech, so I do not know the quality of those cards.  The 7600GS is a decent card, but I'm not sure how well it will run FSX as I do not have the game yet.  Make sure that your Dell supports PCI Express cards though before buying this.

Well if what I have been told by other people is correct, chaintech is the motherboard maker, nVIDIA makes the chipsets for them. So I guess it is a nVIDIA video card? I am so confused I give up  ;D I just want something with better graphics than this onboard crap! ::)

To clear some things up, a graphics card is a daughterboard, not a motherboard. Also nVidia makes the chipset, then companies like eVGA put up ram chips and the boards together.

As far as your system goes, your going to need more than just a GPU. I would get the GPU, but for FS9, not FSX. FSX murders even the highest systems here, so basically your not going to get much better than FS9 preformance out of it unless you have a high end system. Get a decent card, some good sceenery meshes, and FE from Flight1, and be happy with that, it will be a better expirance anyway.

Save longer, buy bigger.

Cheers

Viper's point is important.. make sure your board has a x16 PCI slot.

If it does, then you're still stuck in a dilema. I'm running an Athlon64 3700 (overclocked).. 1GB of RAM.. and a 7800GT (overclocked) .. and I'd call it "OK" for FSX (about mid settings)..

My advice would be to either spring for a 7900 series card now..

Well crap! I guess it would be more realistic to get a good card and just go for broke on FS9, I really like it anyway! As for the motherboard I have a PCI E slot so I believe the card I picked out will work allright....I hope.

Thanks guys.

You're buying from some hole in the wall store.

For between $100 and $150 a 7600GT is your best bet. Good card, but not nearly enough to play FSX on good settings. Check it out:

That looks good! I have a new goal now. I just want to play FS9 with the sliders maxed! With this horrible on board GPU I am playing under the default settings :'(

The 7900 series cards are cheap enough now to seriously consider. I wouldn't go less if you have the cash for this much better card series than the 7600.

The 7600 would be disappointing for me, but if you are on onboard graphics, it's a huge upgrade for you.

I have to agree with Congo

Unless you intend to upgrade to DX10 within the next 6-9 months, if you are going to spend money, spend enough to put yourself in something that will make your experince worth it. The 7600 for FSX is not going to get you very far. You need the G71 core of the 7900 series and 512 memory. Its a pay-me-now or pay-me-later thing... eventually you will want better so why not spend a tad more and get 24 pipes with full clock ability over a card that will barely fly FS9 wide open.

You know the more I look through them all I believe you guys are right. I might as well tough it out for a little longer and get a good 7900 Card. The fact is FS9 is plenty for me and I can  wait until the new vista machines for FSX. I really like the XFX 7900GT although it's a 256mb. ??? Any thoughts? Sorry guys! :-[

Keep an eye open, we have a bunch of 512mb 7900GS's already out in the stores here and they are cheapish.

Don't think that it's overkill for FS9 either, FS9 will still challenge the latest cards in a lot of situations.

True true. PMDG and Dreamfleet will suck your frames right out of you.

But with a 7900GT, some tweaking, and some payware, your going to have one hell of a sim, and not even care about not having FSX until you have a rig that can really handel it.

Cheers
