Uh-oh (?)

Postby beaky » Sun Nov 05, 2006 7:07 am

Very odd... I usually shut tdown my computer at the end of the day, and when I went to boot it up this morning, I got a "Boot disc failure-insert system disc and hit enter" message in POST. Booted again and entered setup, and saw that somehow my 200GB HDD had moved up the priority list (it should boot from the 40GB drive, where I have the OS installed). Changed that, and now it seems OK, but... What the heck happened, I wonder? I haven't changed any settings lately... ???

I've had that happen many times, over many years on many computers running every version of Windows...

Never did get a satisfactory answer as to why.

One theory that "kinda" made sense .. (especially on older, simpler more volitile bios .. more specifically the much more volitile CMOS memory.. which is really some simple PROM where all your "set up" settings are saved).. was simply a dropped bit or slight corruption (not the BIOS, but the CMOS).

Going into setup, always fixed it for me.

It really should depend on the CMOS Battery. This kinda fault is typical for that.

That and power glitches if the system is not on a UPS.

It can be due to a bios reset for the reasons described above.

Not only can the HDD priority be changed but other BIOS settings as well, this can upset all kinds of parameters so bios needs to be checked.

No UPS, but I do have a surge-protecting power strip for everything... but there could be something to that; the power in this building is pretty funky.
Never, ever had this happen before, though...
the good news: it's stable now, but badly in need of a de-frag and general cleanup.
