A duel core processer is just that. Two processers strapped together, and working in sync.
Think of it this way. Pentium D, and AMD x2 work off the classic style. This is basically two people on an assembly line both working together to build a car. The only thing that slows them down is that if person two needs a tool that person one has, he still has to go back to the toolbox to get it. This slows things down a bit. The other problem is that they work on completely different tasks, which again gets twice the work done, but it takes a bit longer.
Conroe (Core 2 Duo) uses a new style of cache shairing so basically you have the same two guys working on the car. But now if guy two needs a tool guy one has in his toolbelt, he can borrow it insted of having to go back to the toolbox. Also if only one task needs to be done, it gets spread over the two cores, insted of only one doing it.
Cheers
