Heya guys,

I've been having a problem recently with the 'grainy-ness' of some textures in FS. This happens both with the general airport environment textures (eg.taxiways/runways but not building) and the new Flight scenery Portland. It really mucks up the whole look of the scenery. This is mainly in pearson field where the textures are naturally grainy anyway, also, after doing quiet alot of tweaking to flightsim involving not just the cfg. but also new drivers. The text within flightsim has become blurred, almost unreadable... Can anyone point me toward the possible causes? As i have tweaked to many things to try them each in turn..

I think he means his MIP-Mapping is too high (You are talking about FS9 right?) Turn it down to four, no higher, if it isnt already, and see what happens!

MipMap quality level depends on the video card and drivers

For ATI, it does not matter what ATI card it is, Mip Detail cannot exceed 4 without nasty grainy shimmers. With Nvidia it can go to 8 with the 7xxxx series cards and some 6xxx series assuming the drivers are up to date and set up correctly.

I did say if your monitor can handle it.. most newr units built in the last 3 years can do 85-120 wihout a problem and typically the native rate is 75-85.

Thanks for the help guys but I'm still experiencing the grainyness.

I have turned down Mip-mapping both in the sim and on ATi Tray tools (Omega drivers) but it still seems to be there..

Reagarding the AF Nick, for some reason when I turn it on, my frames take a massive hit when looking along the horizon. Everything seems to be fine when looking above of below. So for the moment I've just left it on application controlled, which seems to sort it...

Sorry if I want clear enough Mees, but it is quite hard to explain, as even a screeny doesnt do it justice (you can't notice it as much while stationary). It sort of flickers while moving, which makes it really obvious..

Sorry, I know I'm probaly not making much sense but I cant think of any other way to describe it....

get rid of the hacked drivers, use driver clean pro in safe mode to clean the system and install the official cat drivers from ATI. Get rid of Ray Adams tray tools. that damn program is also known for messing up drivers. ATI Tool is the only tool I would use for the tray to overclock. The cat control center works just fine for anything else that needs to be set on ATI.

I dont know what card you are running other than it is ATI and if is is above an X800 series, the official cat drivers are the best.

check the FS9.cfg file and make sure it does not show multiple driver configuration lines. Many times it is best to simply delete the FS9.cfg file and let it rebuild when a driver replacement is done.

Typically the FS9.cfg file should be set up like this:

FS9 CONFIGURATION FILE REBUILD


Save a copy of your current FS9.cfg file in a safe place. Then DELETE the FS9.cfg file being used by the sim.

Start Flight Simulator. You will be starting clean with a new FS9.cfg file Let the sim boot and go to the SETTINGS area. Make the following changes:

DISPLAY BUTTON:  
Scenery Tab:  
All sliders to 100% and ALL check boxes checked (water FX on 100%)

Aircraft Tab:
Drop down box, select HIGH, which should enable everything

Weather Tab:
60 -40
