Booting off an extirnal drive.

Okay so I got asked a random question today, and I was a little stumped as to how to answer. The question was "Could I boot Vista off an extirnal hard drive?" I know that the answer is yes, but what I couldn't tell him was if there was going to be a preformance drop. I figured it would be a small one, but I really don't know.

I guess you would see a performance decrease, if you compare an external usb connector to a SATA interface then yes...

I use E-Sata drives and it is just like useing an internal HDD. The E-Sata enclosures are the same price as a USB enclosure.

The enclosures have both E-Sata and USB connectors if you need to take a drive with you.

The Vantec enclosures come with the hardware required to hook the drive up.

it wouldnt actuayl be a noticable drop though if he ahd latest USB 2.0

Tis what I figured. The drive is is a western digital passport 120GB drive. We are going to install it tonight and see how well it works. I have a friend who boots OSX x86 useing the same drive, and it works fine, but I thought it may be a little different for MS as they are a different kernal.

A little off topic, I was browsing over some MS Vista news that appeared to be outlining booting Vista to ramdrives. Coming straight from a MS tech newsletter, I thought that was pretty cool.
