Random RAM question

Postby xFLAMESx » Wed Oct 11, 2006 7:02 pm

Hi guys, just a quick one...

I'm looking to upgrade the RAM in my system (currently at 512Mb :-/) and was just wondering what I would need to do if I wanted to get a couple of chips with a higher mhz than my current ones.
Would I need to fiddle with the BIOS or anything to get them working correctly or just 'plug in + play'?

I know I can't mix & match speeds but was wondering if it would be too complicated to change completely.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Carl

It depends on the motherboard that you have.  Post your specs so we can see what you are looking for..  You may need to fiddle with the bios if it is an older motherboard.
Mess with the best, die like the rest.

It's a factory standard PB straight from PC World.
All I've done is add another 256 RAM.

Celeron 2.5Ghz
512 RAM (Currently at 333Mhz [is that ok? ???])
All I can find on my MOBO is "SIS 962UA", dunno if that's what you're looking for?

Hopefully that helps

Cheers,
Carl

Hi guys,

Fixed it...gotta love the Packard Bell site...
I can upgrade my system to PC3200 without it needing any kind of overhaul...I guess that's some good news...now I just gotta figure out whether I want (and can afford) 1, 1.5 or 2Gb in here...

Any suggestions for affordable, but high(ish) performing memory (preferably UK based) will gladly be accepted ;)

Cheers,
Carl

A Celeron on an SIS chipset isn't going to perform well anyway, despite what ram you add to it. Waste of time IMHO but if you can get 512mb extra to bring it to a total of 1mb, it may help a little..... don't expect miracles, you bought a cheap and nasty PC off the shelf.

Haha, don't I know it mate ;D

It's just been a case of having the money to upgrade or build from scratch...I guess it's time to make an expensive xmas list ;)
Don't expect much out of it tbh, just an extra little kick >:( LOL
