PSU

Postby Gunny04 » Tue Oct 10, 2006 1:49 am

Ok I think I know what fried my old computer, the PSU (Cheapo 20 dollar one) anyways...... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817128005 will this be a good enough one? I dont need anymore than 450 really, and 480 should do this system good even with a DX10 card I think, so cameron, your thoughts? I cant really afford a 100 dollar PSU, but this slightly cheaper one may do! Cheers, Gunny

EDIT: I am going to have to save for a month or so for this one, or should I just save for two months and get the 580 watt 100 dollar one?

For $55 it is a good PSU, but the Type R is more stable. So if your worried about getting surged then buy the Type R, as you have a better chance of surviving a bad surge, if not then this is fine.

PSU are bad surge protectors though. It's better to have an external surge protector. That way if you have a big surge you'll fry the surge protector not the PSU.

Well obviously, however if you get a surge larger than your protector (say your house gets hit) then your going to want a good PSU to handle it. And there is such a thing as an internal surge ;)

Just watch out for the cheapo brands that claim to give you 400 W, but give you 300 W instead with 400 W only as a maximum! I've been told to stay away from sweex en q-tec and undoubtedly there are some others.

This one looks OK though. But are you sure you need 480 W ?

Pigeon, welcome to hardware's best PSU company. Hiper make the best PSU's ever, and though 480W may be overkill for gunny's system he is planing to upgrade his video card, and when he does, he is going to need the extra power.

Cheers

Upgrade video card, Overclock video card, if I can get to the Power controls on the motherboard, Overclock this Venice, then I plan to add a sound card, a few high powered fans..... about 4-5 hard drives....... and a crapload of other stuff that I'll think of!

In that case your definately going to need the 580W. The 480 will be able to do the new video card + the overclock + mabe 3 hard drives, but what your talking about needs more than 480W.
