Monitor suggestions...

So I have now purchased my new computer, but I need a monitor. I was originally thinking of buying a cheap crt to use until I could afford a nice LCD, but I don't have enough desk space. I've been looking around for something that is widescreen LCD, preferably 6ms or less response time with a decent contrast ratio. I'm looking for at least 19" widescreen or more, and the best deal I've found is an Acer 22" Widescreen for $380 CDN with a 5ms response time. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? My price range is around $200-$400 CDN.

Look at Sceptre. Their Ninja series are quite nice.

I'm debating now to go with widescreen or just a normal monitor. What are the advantages/disadvantages?

Advantage to widescreen, Nice and big (Huge actually and makes FS guages readable) The bad thing..... if you dont have a super graphics card, you cant run games maxed out...... I would get the one I have, which is
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824009091 an acer, 19 inch widescreen, very affordable and fantastic! I got mine with my computer.... for the price, its a fantastic monitor..... Cheers, Gunny
EDIT: Second disadvantage, they dont run in standard resolutions so when you update drivers, you have to Make your own Resolution, like my monitor is 1440X900, it makes resizing Screenshots impossible to 800X600 so I go with 800X500....

Yeah I'm getting a 7900GT KO with my new computer, so I think I would be okay to run a 19" or 22" widescreen. I'm looking either at the Acers especially, but I'm going to wait until I have put together my new comp to buy one.

Widescreen is a con job. Dollar for dollar, you don't gain width, you just lose height.

EDIT: Not really congo, I just checked the dimensions on my CRT to my LCD, its about the same, but it seems its personal prefference really!

I was curious about that.
So.. In FS9, you can't see a wider "panorama" with a wide-screen.. but just "squish" the same "view" ?

I'm not sure Brett, I haven't used a WS in FS or anything else. Some games probably offer the panorama view which is fine if you want it, as long as the point of interest isn't above or below you such as in a dogfight sim.
I wonder how many poor victims just don't see me coming because of that

if you run the propper resolution (your monitors normal one) FS Displays normal, but with bigger guages and such (it isnt stretched in any way it looks normal) as for loosing height, thats not true (For me) if you have the features on DVD players or an HDTV you can make it full screen without loosing quality or picture in any way, though Widescreen DVDs and such are different than games. In a game if your main resolution is set and you set it in a game, it looks quite normal I cant post a full screen image of my screenshots on simvi, and I also dont have a digital camera to prove what I am saying. If you loose height it isnt at a loss because I usually dont look over the monitor.... Cheers, Gunny

Actually, isn't the number of inches a screen is, the top left hand corner to the bottom right hand corner? If that's the case the screen would be wider but shorter?

Ok.. I'm no genius, but if FS9 fills a wide-screen monitor (proper display settings) without

I can instantly turn my standard display into "Widescreen + Highscreen" in FS9 by panning the zoom out a notch.
Size is EVERYTHING, widescreen is just marketing and pandering to some "arty" directors in Hollywood who want to show some peripheral action/moods/whatever while not losing focus on the foreground shot.
This can be used to good effect but it shouldn't be defining display dimension universally.

The red and yellow screens below are the same width, which one is bigger?
The black screen is standard 4:3 aspect ratio, it is a little wider again than the Yellow Widescreen shown, but look at the amazing size difference.
They shouldn't call them Widescreens, they should call them, Shortscreens, but then, that might not be politically correct
