Congo, Ctjoyce and others, I need some advice...

Hi guys...

I've been fed up with my graficscard lately... lots of driverproblems and no stable fs no more... grrr...

Now, I don't have heaps of cash to spent, cause I just bought a central heater, a gardenshed, a new driveway and I'm currently looking into a nice sectional garagedoor...

Just to put an emphasis on my priority at the moment...  ;D

So, here's my current system:

P-4 2.4 Ghz
Asus P4T-E motherboard
768 Mb Ramm
Geforce Ti4200 - 64 Mb card

I'm thinking of flunking a new graphicscard in my system, but as I'm not eager to change the motherboard, processor etc, I'll have to stick to AGP

Here are my candidates:

MSI NX7600GS-TD256 - 256Mb TV-Out/DVI - AGP

or

Sapphire X1600Pro - 512 Mb TV-Out/DVI AGP

They are about

Personally I'm not a bigger fan of ithor of those cards for a gaming system. If I were you I would look at the ATi Radeon X850XT. It has about the same specs as those two cards, but has a more efficent core, so it games a bit better.

Also take a look at what the prices on the 7800GS and 7900GS are running these days, as they may just fit into your budget.

Cheers

For the lower price the x850xt is the best bet in ATI. If it is overclocked a bit it will equal or out perform the Nivida and ATI cards mentioned and the visual quality will be better as well.

The only card that is worth going up to past that is the Gainward 7800GS+ 512 which uses a hacked G70 core for 7900GTX performance. The probem is that card is outside of the budget mentioned but it is the best AGP card you can buy.

Based on the motherboard and processor, purchasing a G7800GS+ would probably be a waste because your system would bottleneck the video card so I have to go with Cam on that recomendation and say the ATI x850xt would be your best cost/performance card and I would highly recommend it over anything else.

Omag, I wouldn't waste much more money on that system, your graphics slot isn't even 8x AGP (the spec says 4x/pro) ......indeed, if it is a pro slot and not a combo slot, you may have difficulty finding a card to fit it, so be warned.

Ugh... Congo just made my worst nightmare come true... I was kinda suspecting the AGP-slot stuff would come up... I wasn't sure it would matter... perhaps I should look into a new motherboard, but that would mean new memory too... oh dear me...  :-/  ;D

Omag, I'd buy a average video card, maybe a X850XT, then wait till mid next year where upgrade to a new DX10 Vista rig :)

A new motherboard may be the way to go, and since you only have a northwood, and are looking for AGP there is no need to get new memory. Both ASUS and Gigabyte make exccellent boards for about 65USD that would fid your needs perfectly.

And stay with the X850 for the price, its the only card with GDDR3 RAM. Look at Sapphire Tech as the company.
