Fozzersartifacts...!

Postby Fozzer » Thu Sep 28, 2006 11:19 am

Hello Lads....

Have you any idea what is causing this effect when I start up my FS 2004.....>>>

Image

Is seems to be related to certain FS 2004 effects, such as "wispy" clouds, etc....
...it also occurs in 3D Mark 2001 where "dust" is thrown up from the wheels of the motor cars....!

It can easily be cleared in FS 2004 by changing to the FS Navigator screen and back again, effectively refreshing the screen...;)...!

It is an effect which has only appeared recently, and is not due to overheating, ventilation, or voltage problems; after checking, these are quite normal.

I have tried a number of Nvidia drivers, both new and old, but none of them actually cure the problem.

It's no big deal, but it would be interesting to know what is causing it.

Computer details below.

Cheers all... ;D...!

Paul...with artifart sound effects... ;)...!
Win 8.1 64-bit. DX11. Advent Tower. Intel i7-3770 3.9 GHz 8-core. 8 GB System RAM. AMD Radeon HD 7700 1GB RAM. DVD ROM. 2 Terra Byte SATA Hard Drive. Philips 17" LCD Monitor. Saitek Cyborg X Fly-5 Joystick. ...and a Briggs and Stratton Petrol Lawn Mower.

Hmmm... if it's not drivers, I detect a dead card coming your way!

That kind of effect often happens when the RAM on your graphics card goes toes-up.

The reason "refreshing" the screen works is it puts new information back into the RAM, so it will then show the correct image.

You could try an FS re-install, but if it's doing it in 3DMark as well, I don't think it will help.

I (like Geforce) would suggest some hardware is due for giving up the ghost.

LOL...!

... just done a few searches for "6600GT artifact problems"...
...appears it's a common problem with this card...:'(...!

I seem to remember a TV show about UFO's tha talked about flying "rods" or something like that.  Maybe this is Microsoft's versions of that ?  ;)

If you underclock the card's memory clock and it solves the problem, then your VRAM is definitely at fault.

If that's the case, its RMA/replace time!

Hello Lads... ;)...!

This is the supplied setup by BFG for my BFG 6600GT OC card.
It is overclocked slightly by the suppliers as you can see....

Image

Do the settings look OK to you...?

Paul...it's 8 O'clock now.... 8)...!

P.S. I gather that the frequency of the card varies automatically, depending upon the application being run at the time, eg: desktop or graphic intensive "game"....

Standard 2D.
Low Power 3D.
Performance 3D.

Nice Fozzer! Cheers, Gunny

I have slightly reduced the Memory clock speed from 1050 to 1027 and all seems to be OK so far....
...more experiments on the way... ;)...!

By the way, which would have the most effect on the quality/smoothness of the scenery, the Core clock speed or the Memory clock speed, .....or a correct combination of both...?

Cheers... ;)...!

Paul...with failing memory....where am I... :'(...?

Wowzers....!

Just ran 3D Mark 2001 again and reducing the Memory clock speed slightly from its supplied setting of 1050 down to 1027 certainly cured the problem... ;D...!
(The strange artifacts were actually tumbling rocks dislodged by the cars in the first demo)....;)...!

It also cures the artifact problem in FS 2004 as well...!

Whether this means that I am starting to have trouble with my card's memory, or whether the supplier overclocked the card's memory too highly in the first place, I don't know...?

Cheers Lads...and thanks for the tips regarding the memory speeds... :-*...!

Cheers all...!

The card is busted.

I personally never had a case where artifacts were caused by incorrect software settings. Every single time I had artifacts the card was broken.

On the positive side you could use this as an excuse to buy a faster card.
