Is it ok to shut down a computer or laptop from the power button instead of windows? does it damage the hardware by taking all the power away?

I only recomend doing that if the computer locks up, it doesnt save anything, and causes your hard drive to sometimes (not always) have to do a boot check the next time you start the computer, Gunny

Depending on how it's configured, a momentary press of the power button should do the same as using 1 of the Windows-'Turn off Computer' functions. Windows will go thru it's normal proceedure.

You can configure the power button function in
